Chelsea in talks with Valentin Barco Chelsea have opened negotiations to bring Argentina international Valentín Barco to Stamford Bridge as an important cog in their future defensive plans. Having just turned 20 Barco already has the technical intelligence, tactical adaptability and flair that Chelsea have been desperate to find in a modern-day left-back.

Barco graduated from the Boca Juniors youth system with 23 first-team appearances, with his confident dribbling and non-stop attacking runs catching the eye of top scouts from Europe. Brighton signed him in January 2024 for about £7.8 million, and though minutes were scarce for him at the Amex, were shipped out on loan to Sevilla and then to Strasbourg — a club owned by Blue Co, Chelsea’s parent company.

Graeme Bailey: “Chelsea are aware of him [Valentin Barco]. They have come in, trying to do everything they can, he has a small release clause – only about £8 million.

But it’s my understanding that some teams might pay slightly more than that. So you may see a £10 or £12… pic.twitter.com/TRfaJcqLs3

Barco has been building his profile at Strasbourg. In the current season he has made appearances in 14 Ligue 1 games, adjusting to the physicality and the speed of European football. His displays have rekindled interest at Chelsea. The Blues haven’t had stability yet at left-back with Ben Chilwell struggling with injuries and Marc Cucurella’s form inconsistent, view Barco as a high-upside alternative with long-term value.

The best thing about Barco is he can do both. He’s able to play as a conventional left-back and as an inverted full-back, giving our tactics flexibility in terms of formations. Moreover, his passing range, one-on-one defending and positional awareness are all impressive for his age — and his vigour reminds us of a young Marcos Alonso, with more impressive defensive instincts.

Chelsea are not the only horse in the race. Fellow Premier League sides Manchester City and Newcastle United have also shown an interest in Valentín Barco, sensing an opportunity to sign one of South America’s most promising full-backs before his value skyrockets. Brighton, meanwhile, are open to selling should a suitable bid arrive and Chelsea’s ownership of Strasbourg could assist with under-the-radar negotiations.

The biggest thing Chelsea have in their favour is their multi-club set-up. Barco’s relationship with the Stamford Bridge side has seen the Colombian remain in the orbit of Chelsea’s scouts and the powers that be in West London. That insider info, plus the Blues history of blooding young stars via the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka and Malo Gusto, may well be the game-changer.

Chelsea have priced Valentin Barco at approximately £25 million and consider him an investment—a move that matches their transfer approach to sign highly rated players before they become bonafide superstars. Although the clubs haven’t finalized the deal yet, they plan to hold advanced discussions throughout June.

Should the trade come to pass, Barco probably won’t be a day one starter. Given time, practice and an opportunity to jell, he could be an important piece of a new-look Chelsea defense. His profile matches the club’s vision: young, adaptable, and already experienced at a top level.

Chelsea’s interest in Valentín Barco makes perfect sense from both a tactical and developmental standpoint. He’s young yet battle-tested, technical yet tenacious — and at just 20, he hasn’t even come close to hitting his ceiling. It’s also a sign of what Chelsea’s multi-club model can make possible, as they have a more available channel through which Barco could slot in.

Still, it’s not risk-free. Barco hasn’t had a full season’s worth of Premier League football and there are questions about just how quickly he can adjust to the most physical league in world football. But in the current market, £25 million for a potential long-term starter feels like a smart, forward-thinking move.
