'They've unearthed a gem' - Michael Vaughan showers praise on Razaullah after sensational Test debut

21-year-old Razaullah announced himself on the international stage with a breathtaking 81 off 63 balls, striking nine sixes on his Test debut for Pakistan against England in the third Test at Edgbaston on September 11, 2026. His innings came in Pakistan’s second innings, in which they posted 449 after being bowled out for 133 in the first innings, overcoming a deficit of 320 runs after England posted 453 in their first innings.

The young all-rounder shared a 121-run ninth-wicket partnership with Mohammad Abbas, who contributed 42 runs, to push the match into a fourth day. England now require 130 runs to win the Test and complete a 3-0 series sweep. Razaullah was eventually dismissed stumped off Dan Lawrence’s bowling. Aside from the batting Exploits, he also shone with the ball, taking four wickets, including a maiden Test scalp of England skipper Joe Root. Former England captain Michael Vaughan labelled Razaullah a talent for the ages after his fierce batting display.

“England are going to win this Test match, I’m sure, but Razaullah has given Pakistan cricket some hope. They’ve unearthed a gem and he will be a superstar for many years,” Vaughan said on BBC Test Match Special.

What records did Razaullah set on his Test debut?

Razaullah’s nine sixes equalled Tim Southee’s record for the most sixes hit by a batter on Test debut, placing him in rare company at the very start of his international career. He also set a separate record by hitting the most sixes by a No. 9 batter in the history of Test cricket.

His nine-six blitz came despite Pakistan being in a precarious position, having conceded a first-innings deficit of 320 runs. Shan Masood scored 95 and Babar Azam scored 76 in the second innings, but it was Razaullah’s lower-order assault that extended the match beyond three days. Vaughan reflected on the broader significance of the day, lauding the Pakistan side for their fight after weeks of turmoil.

“There wouldn’t be any person in the world that would’ve thought we’d go to day four. That is what Pakistan cricket is. They have had a difficult few weeks. The team has been in turmoil. That is why I love Pakistan cricket,” he said.

How did Vaughan assess England’s tactics on Day 3?

While Vaughan was full of admiration for Razaullah, he was also critical of how England handled the situation on the third day at Edgbaston. The hosts still hold a commanding position heading into Day 4, needing only 130 runs to win, but Vaughan felt their approach in the field left room for improvement.

“England will look back at a lot of the tactics and realise they got it wrong. The short stuff, one over of spin, the second new ball with the spinner. That day today will make the England team realise there is a long way to go to be world-class,” Vaughan said.
