Cricket Australia is in active discussions with men’s head coach Andrew McDonald regarding a potential contract extension that would take him beyond his current deal, which is set to expire at the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Australia are scheduled to defend their ODI World Cup title at that tournament, making the timing of these negotiations particularly significant.
McDonald has held the head coach role in a permanent capacity since April 13, 2022. His original four-year contract was due to expire midway through 2026 before a previous extension pushed his tenure through to the end of the 2027 cycle. The latest discussions indicate Cricket Australia is keen to plan further ahead as the side navigates a period of transition.
Outgoing CA chair Mike Baird offered warm words about the coaching partnership in place, saying the game was lucky to have both McDonald and chair of selectors George Bailey working together and that they had done a remarkable job. Bailey has served as chair of selectors since August 2021, and together the pair oversaw Australia‘s 2023 ODI World Cup and World Test Championship double.
What has CA said about McDonald’s future?
CA chief executive Todd Greenberg confirmed publicly that contract talks are under way, making clear that the board values McDonald’s contribution highly. Greenberg’s comments came as Australia sit at No. 1 in the Test rankings, with a deciding match against South Africa in Cape Town still to be played as part of an extensive period in the format.
“Yes, we are talking to Andrew about his contractual status and what that means going forward. He’s held in incredibly high regard by the Cricket Australia board and by all of us. I think he’s done an outstanding job, and I think his results tell you that,” Greenberg said, as quoted by Cricinfo.
McDonald’s coaching group includes Michael Di Venuto, Daniel Vettori and Andre Borovec, a staff that has worked alongside him through the sustained success the Australian men’s side has enjoyed since 2022.
How is CA planning for the transition ahead?
Beyond the immediate question of McDonald’s contract, Cricket Australia executives have made clear they are thinking carefully about the medium-term shape of the squad. The current group features players widely regarded among the finest to have represented Australia, but the organisation is conscious that retirements will eventually reshape the side.
“We are in deep conversations about how this team will look and operate over the next six, 12, 18, 24 months. You know, we’re in a generation of some of the best players that have ever played, so we’re in a very fortunate position. But we have an eye on what that looks like after they finish their playing days. We don’t know when that will be but, of course, we’ve got to have an eye on what the transition looks like,” Greenberg added.
The coaching staff has been specifically tasked with managing this generational transition, and CA wants to ensure proper oversight is in place to protect the programme through its next phase, whoever may ultimately lead it. No timeline for the conclusion of the current contract discussions has been confirmed.
