Mumbai Indians are reportedly reconsidering their captaincy arrangement ahead of IPL 2027, with Rohit Sharma emerging as a frontrunner to return to the leadership role he held for several years before being replaced. No official confirmation has been issued by the franchise.
According to Sports Tak, Rohit is at the top of the list of candidates being considered by the MI management. The development follows three seasons, from 2024 to 2026, during which Rohit served the franchise purely as a specialist batter after being removed from the captaincy role ahead of IPL 2024.
Why is MI reconsidering the captaincy ahead of IPL 2027?
Hardik Pandya was appointed as MI captain on December 15, 2023, replacing Rohit ahead of IPL 2024. The decision attracted significant attention at the time, given Rohit’s long association with the franchise as its leader. With the management now said to be looking at alternatives, the captaincy question has resurfaced ahead of the next season.
Under Hardik’s captaincy, MI qualified for the playoffs only once in three seasons. In IPL 2024, MI finished at the bottom of the points table under the Baroda all-rounder’s leadership. This year, the five-time champions finished at No. 9, with just four wins and 10 defeats from 14 matches.
What has Rohit Sharma achieved as MI captain?
Rohit Sharma won five IPL titles as Mumbai Indians captain, a tally he shares with MS Dhoni. Rohit reached that landmark in fewer seasons than Dhoni, reflecting the consistency with which he led the franchise across his tenure.
At the international level, Rohit’s leadership record is simply brilliant. He led India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024 and to the Champions Trophy in 2025, establishing himself as one of the most decorated captains in Indian cricket history.
Whether MI ultimately restore Rohit to the captaincy or chooses a different candidate, the franchise is yet to make any public announcement. The situation is expected to become clearer as IPL 2027 preparations progress.
Whoever is given captaincy of the Mumbai Indians next season, the goal will be to help the franchise bring back the glory days.
