Melbourne Renegades Women pulled off a nervy four-wicket win over Hobart Hurricanes Women in the ninth match of the Women’s Big Bash League 2026-27 at Hobart on November 4, 2026, completing the chase of 155 off the final delivery of the 19.5th over to finish on 155 for 6.
West Indies international Hayley Matthews was the cornerstone of the Renegades’ pursuit, contributing a knock that kept her side in the hunt throughout. Sophie Molineux was the pick of the Hurricanes’ bowlers, returning figures of 4 for 22 to apply sustained pressure on the Renegades’ middle order.
Hobart Hurricanes had posted 7 for 154 in their allotted 20 overs. The Hurricanes were cautious early, managing only 20 runs in the powerplay while losing two wickets inside the opening four overs. They recovered steadily, reaching 100 by the 15th over before adding 54 runs across the final five overs to set a competitive target of 155.
Nicola Carey was the standout for Hobart with the bat, striking 62 off 43 balls. Heather Graham dismissed Matthews during the Renegades’ chase, while Molly Strano removed Molineux via a caught-and-bowled to reduce the visitors at a critical stage.
How did Matthews build the Renegades’ innings?
The Renegades made a brisk start, putting up 33 runs in the opening four overs despite losing an early wicket. Matthews reached her half-century off just 33 balls, hitting eight fours along the way, and the Renegades were well placed at 100 in 12.1 overs.
Courtney Webb provided crucial support, contributing 29 off 25 balls. Together, Matthews and Webb put on a 50-run stand off 33 balls to keep the chase on track. However, the Renegades lost momentum during the second power surge, managing only 17 runs while losing two more wickets in that phase.

Despite those setbacks, the Renegades kept their composure. They reached 150 in the 20th over with one delivery remaining, needing five off the last ball to win. Matthews, who faced 44 balls in total and struck eight boundaries, ensured the side crossed the line to seal a dramatic victory.
What did Carey’s innings mean for the Hurricanes’ total?
Nicola Carey‘s 62 off 43 balls was the defining contribution in the Hurricanes’ innings. Her knock helped Hobart recover from a slow powerplay, where they had scored only 20 runs and lost two wickets in the first four overs, to build a total that ultimately tested the Renegades right to the final delivery.
The Hurricanes’ innings gathered pace after the 15th over, with the side adding 54 runs in the closing five overs to reach 7 for 154. That late acceleration set a target of 155, which proved just enough to take the match to the last ball. Carey’s effort at Hobart on November 4, 2026 was the standout batting performance of the match, even as Molineux’s 4 for 22 with the ball gave the Hurricanes every chance of defending their total.
