Officials at Hnry Stadium in Wellington were forced to delay the start of the second ODI in the five-match series on November 7, 2026, after a saturated outfield made conditions unfit for play. A toss that was due at 7:10 AM IST could not take place on schedule, with the match itself originally set to begin at 7:30 AM IST. The delay added an early-morning layer of uncertainty for fans in India tracking the game across the New Zealand Standard Time zone.

Ground inspectors carried out their first assessment at 7:05 AM IST, arriving five minutes after the scheduled toss. By that point, the weather around the venue had eased to some degree, though officials did not confirm any immediate resumption. Rather, the umpires were not satisfied with the wet outfield and called for the next inspection at 7:45 AM. No overs had been reported as lost at the time of that initial update.

The forecast for Wellington on match day offered little encouragement. Cloud cover was estimated at 99 per cent around the time play was due to start, and the probability of rain stood at 60 per cent. Those conditions left the outfield in a state that prevented a prompt start and kept both teams waiting in the dressing room as ground staff worked to assess the surface.

What is the series context heading into the Wellington ODI?

India arrived at Hnry Stadium leading the five-match ODI series 1-0 after a commanding victory in the series opener in Auckland. Shubman Gill captained the Indian side throughout the series, and his team had already demonstrated their intent with a clinical performance in the first game. Virat Kohli was central to that win, scoring 74 off 51 balls as India sealed the match by five wickets. The result gave India a firm foothold in the series before the weather intervened at Wellington.

The Hnry Stadium is one of New Zealand’s prominent multi-purpose grounds and has hosted only one ODI since 2020. Its exposed location in Wellington makes it particularly susceptible to the kind of weather disruption that affected the second ODI.

What does the wet outfield delay mean for the match?

India, holding a 1-0 lead, had every incentive to push for a result and extend their advantage in the series. New Zealand, on the other hand, needed a positive outcome at home to level the contest. The delay at Hnry Stadium meant both sides had to manage the uncertainty of a potentially curtailed game, with ground staff and match officials working to bring play on as early as conditions allowed.
