Referees from the Northern Sector have commenced the mandatory assessment process ahead of the 2026/27 football season, with a written examination taking place in Techiman as part of efforts to ensure only qualified match officials are appointed for the new campaign.

The exercise has brought together referees from the Northern, Upper East, Upper West and Bono (formerly Brong Ahafo) Regions, all seeking to meet the Association’s requirements for officiating in the upcoming season.

The written examination forms the first stage of a comprehensive assessment programme designed to evaluate the officials’ knowledge and application of the IFAB Laws of the Game. It is a key component of the GFA’s referee development and qualification process aimed at maintaining high officiating standards across all competitions.

Following the written examination, participants will undergo fitness tests and other technical assessments to determine their readiness for appointments during the 2026/27 season. Only referees who successfully satisfy all the prescribed requirements will be cleared to officiate in GFA competitions.

The assessments are intended to ensure that match officials possess not only an excellent understanding of the Laws of the Game but also the physical fitness and technical competence required to manage matches at the highest level.

The has continued to place significant emphasis on referee education and development through regular training programmes, assessments and FIFA and CAF-supported capacity-building initiatives.

The Northern Sector assessment in Techiman is one of several nationwide exercises being conducted ahead of the new season as the Referees Department prepares a pool of competent and well-equipped officials for the upcoming football calendar.

The Association remains committed to raising refereeing standards through continuous education, rigorous evaluation and professional development, ensuring that match officials are adequately prepared to meet the demands of modern football.
