Ghana captain Jordan Ayew, expressed satisfaction with the 4-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the Unity Cup, citing it as a confidence booster after a loss to Nigeria. The Leicester City forward praised the new players for showcasing their talent in the absence of some our key players and highlighted the importance of the win for team spirit. Ayew also expressed gratitude for the support from the Ghanaian community in London and looks forward to the team’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers, believing Ghana have a good chance of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Here’s what he told ghanafa.org after the two matches:

Performance in Unity Cup

Obviously, we needed to bounce back stronger after the loss to Nigeria. I think we didn’t start well against Nigeria, but the second half was brilliant, just that we didn’t take our chances. We have loads of positives to pick from the two games. We wanted to win the Unity Cup, but we fell short in the first game. The lads played well, we created chances, scored four goals and kept a clean sheet, and that is great for us.

On absence of key players and how the new players performed

The other players couldn’t make it but in Ghana we have a lot of talent, and the new players showed their quality in the two matches. There is always a need for us to try some new players. We trained only twice before the first game, but the boys looked ready, sharp and confident in the game against Trinidad and Tobago and that showed in our performance. Hopefully we have all the players back in the subsequent games so that we can fight for the points in the World Cup qualifiers.

On scoring yet another goal and assist against Trinidad and Tobago

Well, I am always focused on doing my best for the national team. It’s not been easy at all but every time I am here, I put my best foot forward and help the team to win games, and I am glad that I scored today and also added one more assist for the second goal. On to the next game, hopefully this will continue in subsequent matches.

On morale boosting win against Trinidad and Tobago

It was really important for us to win today. It’s good for our confidence and team spirit. Honestly, I congratulate the boys and the technical staff for their support. We struggled a bit in the course of last year, but it seems we are picking up the pieces this time around and we are all happy about the turn of events. The performance in the two matches helps us build our confidence and mentality going into the next international window.

On remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches

I think we have a very good chance of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team fought hard for the points against Chad and Madagascar in March and that has put us in a very good place on top of the table. But it is not yet over. We have four more matches to play, and we are focused on winning them. We have Chad and Mali in September; it won’t be easy, same as Central African Republic and Comoros. But with this kind of mentality and team spirit, we will succeed.

On support from the Ghanaian Community in London

We are feeling good; it’s good they came here in their numbers to support us. We enjoyed it and we can’t thank them enough.
