England batting great Joe Root etched his name into Test cricket history on September 12, 2026, becoming the batter with the most fifties in the format’s illustrious history. The milestone arrived during England’s eight-wicket victory against Pakistan in the third Test at Edgbaston, where Root walked off unbeaten on 62 off 69 balls, striking nine fours as England successfully chased a target of 130. Jordan Cox was the other not-out batter, finishing on 59.

The innings carried Root’s tally of Test fifties to 69, moving him clear of Sachin Tendulkar’s previous mark of 68. Root had drawn level with Tendulkar during the first Test at Headingley on August 20, 2026, and the record-breaking half-century arrived in the final match of the series. The result at Edgbaston completed a 3-0 whitewash for England, who had already secured victories at Headingley and Lord’s in the earlier two Tests.

Where does Root rank on the all-time list of Test fifties?

Root’s tally of 69 fifties places him at the summit of the all-time standings, with Tendulkar now second on 68. Shivnarine Chanderpaul occupies third position with 66 fifties. Allan Border and Rahul Dravid are joint fourth with 63 each, while Ricky Ponting sits sixth on 62.

The list spans several generations and vastly different playing conditions, making Root’s position at the top a reflection of sustained consistency across a lengthy Test career. He has now surpassed batters widely regarded as among the finest the game has produced, cementing his place in the conversation about the greatest Test batters of all time.

What other records did Root achieve at Edgbaston?

Beyond the fifties landmark, Root became the first batter to accumulate more than 1,000 Test runs at Edgbaston, adding a ground-specific record to his growing collection. The feat also means he has now crossed the 1,000-run mark at four separate Test venues. At Lord’s he has amassed 2,203 runs, at Manchester 1,128, at The Oval 1,050, and Edgbaston now joins that distinguished group.

Only Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting had previously reached 1,000 Test runs at four different venues, placing Root in a very select bracket in the history of the format. The combination of the fifties record and the Edgbaston milestone underlines the remarkable breadth of his achievements across English conditions and beyond, reinforcing his standing as one of the most prolific run-scorers the game has ever seen.
