The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will stage the IPL 2027 auction on home soil, bringing the event back to India after a run of overseas editions. The IPL Governing Council formalised the decision at its meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

The 2027 edition will be a mini-auction rather than a mega auction. No specific Indian city has been announced by the BCCI, and the exact date remains unconfirmed, though the event is broadly expected to fall in December 2026. The last time India hosted an IPL auction was in Kochi in 2023, after which the event moved abroad for successive editions held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi.

Why has the auction been moved back to India?

Several franchises raised concerns with the Governing Council about the practical difficulties of running a mini-auction at an overseas location. A mini-auction is a shorter, smaller event than a mega auction, involving fewer players and a compressed schedule, which makes the cost and complexity of an international setup harder to justify for the ten franchises.

Venue logistics inside India also present their own challenges. The BCCI requires a five-star hotel that can block more than 100 rooms for a couple of nights to accommodate all stakeholders, including franchise representatives, support staff and officials. India’s wedding season, which runs from October through December, reduces the availability of such properties during precisely the window when the auction is typically scheduled, meaning the board must plan city selection carefully before making a formal announcement.

The Governing Council has signalled that the arrangement is format-specific rather than a permanent change in policy. The mega auction pencilled in for the year after IPL 2027 could return to an overseas venue, indicating that the board views the overseas model as viable for larger events where the scale justifies the additional expenditure.

What else did the Governing Council address on September 15?

The meeting also took up the future of the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to substitute a player during a match. A follow-up Governing Council meeting has been scheduled for approximately one month later to reach a final decision on whether the rule continues into IPL 2027.

The majority of franchises have voiced opposition to the Impact Player rule. At the same time, a section of franchises has pointed out that their squad compositions were built around the rule being in place, which complicates any straightforward removal. The outcome of the next meeting will determine whether the rule survives for the upcoming season or is scrapped before the mini-auction takes place.
