The proposed trade involving Hardik Pandya and Yashasvi Jaiswal between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals appears unlikely to materialise. As of October 14, 2026, the two franchises are no longer engaged in any active discussions on the matter, having held preliminary talks a few months ago that did not progress meaningfully.

The timing is notable. The November 15 retention deadline for franchise-level decisions is approaching, and with no dialogue currently under way between the two camps, the window for a deal of this complexity is narrowing fast. Last year, Rajasthan Royals completed a significant trade when Sanju Samson moved to Chennai Super Kings in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, a development that had raised expectations of further inter-franchise activity ahead of this cycle.

On the Mumbai Indians side, the franchise is yet to finalise its coaching setup and has indicated it wants to resolve that matter before turning its attention to the captaincy question. Reports of Rohit Sharma returning as captain have not come up for formal discussion at the franchise so far. Jaiswal, meanwhile, is under contract with the Royals for at least one further season, which adds a structural layer of difficulty to any trade proposal.

Why have talks between the two franchises lost momentum?

Neither franchise has publicly explained why discussions stalled, but several factors appear relevant. Rajasthan Royals recently affirmed Riyan Parag’s place within their internal leadership structure, a commitment that makes Jaipur a less straightforward destination for Hardik. The contractual situation surrounding Jaiswal further limits how easily such a swap could be structured within the existing trade framework.

The Pitru Paksha period, which concluded earlier this week, is regarded as inauspicious for significant decisions by certain franchise owners, and that cultural consideration may have contributed to the pause in formal activity. With the November 15 deadline still weeks away, it is not impossible that one side revisits the conversation, but the current picture does not point in that direction.

Who could open for Rajasthan Royals if Jaiswal remains at the franchise?

Should Jaiswal stay in Jaipur, the Royals have a compelling in-house alternative at the top of the order. Lhuan-dre Pretorius, a left-handed South African opener, has been part of the Royals setup across the past two seasons, though his IPL appearances have been limited to three matches in total, two of which came last season.

His performances in other T20 competitions tell a different story. In the most recent Major League Cricket season, Pretorius accumulated 465 runs at a strike rate of over 176, with a century and four fifties to his name. He finished third on the MLC batting charts that year, behind Matthew Short and Andries Gous. In a T20I tri-series held in Namibia, he scored 226 runs across four innings at a strike rate of 179.37. In the ongoing SA20, he produced an unbeaten 188 from 79 balls for the Titans against the Knights. Across formats and continents, those numbers make a strong case that the Royals already hold a credible option at the top of their batting order.
