Now, as India prepares to kick off its new home season against West Indies, the young batter is reflecting on the challenge of sustaining that success at the international level.
Abhishek Sharma spoke ahead of the five-match T20I series against West Indies, which begins on Tuesday, October 6. He is part of India’s squad for the series, with Shreyas Iyer leading the team. The 26-year-old discussed what it takes to maintain winning momentum after a major tournament triumph.
“I feel, in cricket especially, when I came, I was 24, now I am 26, as a young cricketer you tell yourself that there’s still a lot to achieve, it’s just a start. Doing it once, I feel, is still easy, but making that thing a habit and doing it again and again, keeping the process the same, it’s not easy as a player. But if the atmosphere in the team is such that everyone wants to perform for each other, wants to make India win, wants to dominate, then I feel it becomes a habit and it definitely helps,” the southpaw said while speaking on JioStar’s ‘Follow the Blues: Gen-Next Abhishek’.
The challenge of sustaining success
The challenge of repeating success is central to Sharma’s thinking as India enters a new phase of its T20 international schedule. He recognises that winning a major tournament is one achievement, but building consistency across multiple series and matches requires a different mindset and collective effort. The emphasis on team atmosphere and unified desire to perform underscores his belief that individual excellence must be supported by a strong team environment where every player is committed to the same goal.
Sharma’s perspective reflects the mindset of India’s younger generation of cricketers who have tasted success at the highest level. The West Indies series will provide an early opportunity for India to demonstrate whether it can maintain the standards set during the World Cup campaign. The five-match format offers multiple chances for the team to test its consistency and for players like Sharma to reinforce their credentials in the international arena.
