Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, the former India leg-spinner, has been appointed spin bowling coach at the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Cricket Academy on a one-year contract beginning November 2026. Now 60, Sivaramakrishnan will be based at the academy’s Fulung facility in North Guwahati, where he will work with the next generation of spinners from the state.
The groundwork for the appointment was laid on October 18 2026, when Sivaramakrishnan visited the Fulung campus and conducted a session centred on the finer points of leg-spin. That visit evidently impressed the association enough to formalise the arrangement within weeks.
Earlier in 2026, Sivaramakrishnan had stepped away from his position on the BCCI commentary panel, citing insufficient opportunities. The structured coaching role at the ACA represents a clear shift in direction for him following that departure.
What will Sivaramakrishnan’s role involve at the ACA Cricket Academy?
At the Fulung facility, Sivaramakrishnan’s central task will be designing and delivering a coaching programme tailored to the academy’s young spinners. The one-year engagement gives him a full season to build technical foundations and develop individual bowlers within the ACA system.
Beyond his playing background, Sivaramakrishnan brings governance experience to the role, having served as a player representative on the ICC Cricket Committee. That exposure to cricket administration, alongside years in broadcasting, adds a broader perspective to the technical knowledge he will share with his charges.
“Laxman Sivaramakrishnan joins ACA Cricket Academy as Spin Bowling Coach for a one-year term, starting November 2026. The former Indian leg spinner shall impart his expertise to the young and promising spinners through a structured coaching programme at the ACA Cricket Academy, Fulung, North Guwahati.,” an ACA press release read.
What is Sivaramakrishnan’s international playing record?
Sivaramakrishnan’s international career began when he was just 17, making him one of the youngest leg-spinners to represent India at that level. Across nine Tests and 16 ODIs, he claimed 26 wickets in the longer format and 15 in one-day cricket, numbers that reflected genuine promise during a competitive era for Indian spin bowling.
Among the highlights of his Test career was a performance against England in Mumbai where he returned match figures of 12 for 181, a haul that demonstrated his capacity to exploit home conditions against quality opposition. That effort against England remains among the most discussed individual bowling displays of his generation.
On the team honours front, Sivaramakrishnan was part of the India squad that lifted the Benson and Hedges World Championship of Cricket in Australia in 1985, a tournament victory that stands as one of the landmark achievements of Indian limited-overs cricket in that decade. It is that combination of a debut at 17, a World Championship winner’s medal and a 12-wicket Test haul against England in Mumbai that forms the playing pedigree Sivaramakrishnan now carries into his coaching work with Assam‘s spinners.
