For Alexandra Tay, receiving her maiden call-up to the Black Queens was the realisation of a lifelong dream.

“I think that the opportunity to put on your jersey for your country is one that every player dreams of. It’s an honour of the highest regard,” Tay shared.

The young defender was coming out of a computer science class when she got the news, and her parents were the first to know.

Making her debut was even more special, as she stepped on for captain Portia Boakye, with Tay leaning on her teammates for guidance throughout the camp.

Now one of the younger members of the squad, Tay is focused on learning from those around her. As a centre-back, she aims to bring composure and a competitive spirit to the team while fitting into the coach’s system. She credits player Genevieve Clottier, her former U20 World Cup teammate and two-time World Cup captain, as a major inspiration.

Looking ahead, Tay has her sights set on World Cup qualification. For now, she’s focused on building chemistry with her new teammates and keeping the game simple.

“Football’s supposed to be fun,” she said. “I try to bring a level of calm, and hopefully, as I grow into it, I can showcase some of that creativity and vision.”
