Virat Kohli’s return to his very best has coincided with a surge back to the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings for the first time in nearly five years on Wednesday. Kohli’s ascent to the top of the ODI batting rankings was confirmed by the latest rankings update unveiled by the ICC shortly before India’s second match of the ongoing series against New Zealand at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. FOLLOW: IND vs NZ 2nd ODI LIVE SCORE The 37-year-old Kohli displaced his compatriot Rohit Sharma to take the top spot for the first time since losing his No. 1 ranking in the format on April 2, 2021. Kohli gained 12 rating points to move up to 785 rating points, while Rohit ceded six to move down from 781 to 775. New Zealand all-rounder Daryll Mitchell vaulted to second place, his career-best ranking having him within a point from Kohli at 784. After a spell of four consecutive years at the top of the batting rankings in the 50-over format, starting with the 2017 calendar year, Kohli was displaced in early 2021 by Pakistan’s Babar Azam. Babar held onto the top spot for the next four calendar seasons before Rohit clinched the top spot in 2025. .infographic{font-family:”Roboto”,sans-serif;background:#fff;margin-bottom:25px;padding:0;max-width:640px;min-width:640px;} .infographic__header{background:linear-gradient(135deg,#3498db 0%,#2980b9 100%);padding:20px;text-align:center;} .infographic__title{color:#fff;font-size:18px;font-weight:700;margin:0;line-height:1.4;opacity:1;} .infographic__subtitle{color:#fff;font-size:13px;margin-top:8px;opacity:0.95;line-height:1.4;} .infographic__hero{background:#2c3e50;padding:30px 20px;text-align:center;} .infographic__hero-badge{background:#f39c12;color:#2c3e50;padding:8px 16px;border-radius:20px;font-size:12px;font-weight:700;display:inline-block;margin-bottom:15px;opacity:1;line-height:1.4;} .infographic__hero-rank{font-size:72px;font-weight:700;color:#f39c12;line-height:1;margin-bottom:10px;} .infographic__hero-name{color:#fff;font-size:24px;font-weight:700;margin-bottom:8px;opacity:1;line-height:1.4;} .infographic__hero-label{color:#ecf0f1;font-size:14px;opacity:1;line-height:1.4;} .infographic__timeline{padding:20px;background:#f8f9fa;} .infographic__timeline-title{font-size:15px;font-weight:700;color:#2c3e50;text-align:center;margin-bottom:15px;opacity:1;line-height:1.4;} .infographic__timeline-events{display:flex;flex-direction:column;gap:12px;} .infographic__timeline-event{background:#fff;padding:15px;border-radius:8px;box-shadow:0 2px 6px rgba(0,0,0,0.08);border-left:4px solid;} .infographic__timeline-event–reign{border-color:#27ae60;} .infographic__timeline-event–lost{border-color:#e74c3c;} .infographic__timeline-event–return{border-color:#f39c12;} .infographic__timeline-year{font-size:14px;font-weight:700;margin-bottom:6px;opacity:1;line-height:1.3;} .infographic__timeline-event–reign .infographic__timeline-year{color:#27ae60;} .infographic__timeline-event–lost .infographic__timeline-year{color:#e74c3c;} .infographic__timeline-event–return .infographic__timeline-year{color:#f39c12;} .infographic__timeline-description{font-size:12px;color:#555;opacity:1;line-height:1.4;} .infographic__streak{padding:20px;background:#fff;} .infographic__streak-title{font-size:15px;font-weight:700;color:#2c3e50;text-align:center;margin-bottom:15px;opacity:1;line-height:1.4;} .infographic__streak-highlight{background:linear-gradient(135deg,#f39c12 0%,#e67e22 100%);padding:20px;border-radius:8px;text-align:center;margin-bottom:15px;} .infographic__streak-number{font-size:48px;font-weight:700;color:#fff;line-height:1;margin-bottom:8px;} .infographic__streak-label{color:#fff;font-size:13px;opacity:0.95;line-height:1.4;} .infographic__streak-details{display:grid;grid-template-columns:repeat(2,1fr);gap:12px;} .infographic__streak-item{background:#f8f9fa;padding:12px;border-radius:6px;text-align:center;} .infographic__streak-item-number{font-size:24px;font-weight:700;color:#f39c12;line-height:1;margin-bottom:4px;} .infographic__streak-item-label{font-size:11px;color:#7f8c8d;opacity:1;line-height:1.3;} .infographic__branding{background:#3C4557;color:#fff;padding:12px 20px;text-align:center;font-size:13px;opacity:1;} @media (max-width:480px){ .infographic{min-width:auto;max-width:480px;} .infographic__title{font-size:16px;} .infographic__hero-rank{font-size:56px;} .infographic__hero-name{font-size:20px;} .infographic__streak-number{font-size:38px;} .infographic__streak-details{grid-template-columns:1fr;} .infographic__streak-item-number{font-size:22px;} } Virat Kohli: Return to the Summit ICC ODI Batting Rankings | First Time Since April 2021 ICC ODI BATTING RANKINGS #1 VIRAT KOHLI Reclaims Top Spot After 4-Year Wait | Displaces Rohit Sharma Journey Back to No. 1 2017-2020 Kohli’s 4-year reign at No. 1 – Four consecutive calendar years at summit of ODI rankings April 2021 Lost No. 1 ranking to Pakistan’s Babar Azam after 4 years at the top 2021-2024 Babar Azam held top spot for 4 calendar seasons before Rohit Sharma claimed it 2025 Rohit Sharma clinched No. 1 spot – Kohli began pursuit with exceptional form January 2026 Kohli reclaims No. 1 ranking, displacing teammate Rohit Sharma after 4-year wait Fuel for the Comeback 7 Successive 50+ Scores | Equals Indian List A Record 5 Scores for India (2 hundreds vs SA, 1 fifty vs SA, 1 hundred vs AUS, 93 vs NZ) 2 Scores for Delhi (1 hundred, 1 fifty in Vijay Hazare Trophy) Indian Express InfoGenIE However, Kohli cut the gap with his long-time India teammate with a superb scoring streak, starting with the third ODI against Australia in Sydney in October 2025.
