Hyam eyes Wrexham improvement before Rovers return

Dom Hyam heads back to Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Day (12:30 GMT) believing Wrexham must improve their away form in 2026 if they are to contend for a Championship play-off place.

Wrexham are 11th in the second tier, four points outside the top six, after back-to-back festive home victories over Sheffield United and Preston.

Phil Parkinson’s team are unbeaten in 10 league games at the Stok Cae Ras, but are looking for better on their travels having failed to win in the past eight attempts.

“I feel like we need to get a few more results on the road,” Hyam said.

“We have got to take confidence from our home performances that we are a talented group and we have to believe in ourselves away from home a bit more.

“I think if we can do it we’ll be in a really good position.”

Hyam has impressed at the heart of Wrexham’s defence since arriving from Blackburn on 1 September.

The 30-year-old had been a key figure at Blackburn, where he made 135 appearances across three years, before the Red Dragons lured him to Wales just before the summer transfer window closed.

As he prepares for a first return to Ewood Park, Hyam said: “I have a lot of fond memories from my previous club and I have a lot of friends there as well.

“But it’s business at the end of the day and we want to get a good performance and win.

“I have loved it [at Wrexham]. The club has been really good and the fans as well. I feel like I am really at home and enjoying my football.”

Rovers are 19th in the Championship, five points clear of the bottom three, having won only two – but lost just three – of their past 10 matches.

Valerien Ismael’s team have struggled on their own patch this season, having taken fewer home points (nine) than every other side in the division bar bottom-club Sheffield Wednesday.

“They are a good side with a lot of good technical players – they work really hard in and out of possession,” Hyam said.

“It will be another tough Championship game and we’ll have to be at our best to try to get a result.”
