Former Black Satellite Coach Desmond Ofei has been appointed as the new head coach of the national U23 men’s team, the Black Meteors underscoring the FA’s commitment to continuity and transition of youth players into the senior national teams. He steps into the role with a proven track record of success at youth level and experience at the highest tier of Ghanaian football.

Ofei, who currently serves as the Assistant Coach of the Black Stars, has enjoyed an impressive spell with Ghana’s U20 side. Under his stewardship, the Black Satellites won gold at the 13th African Games in 2023, qualified for the U20 AFCON after placing second at the U20 WAFU B Qualifying Tournament in Togo, competed at the U20 AFCON in Egypt, and most recently clinched bronze at the WAFU B U20 Boys Championship in Accra.

He will be assisted by Yaw Preko and Baba Nuhu Malam as assistant coaches. Former Ghana international Yaw Preko brings a wealth of knowledge from stints with Accra Hearts of Oak, Accra Great Olympics, and Nigerian side Ifenyi Ubah. Preko recently guided the national U15 boys to gold at the Mondialito Promise Tournament in Israel. Another assistant will be Malam who is a seasoned coach and until recently, headed the Black Maidens. He brings rich experience from coaching Tamale Utrecht, Bolga All Stars and Real Tamale United. He is currently the head coach of Women’s Premier League side Northern City Ladies FC.

The Black Meteors’ technical team also includes Montari Tagoe, a former Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC goalkeeper, who will serve as the Goalkeepers Coach. Aduana Stars Welfare Officer Atta Yeboah takes up the role of Team Manager, while Henry Bart-Plange will serve as Team Masseur and Baba Aluta of Aduana Stars as the Equipment Officer. Eli Vorgbe has been named as the Video Analyst, adding modern technical support to the setup.

On the medical side, Dr. Eric Tetteh will lead as Team Doctor with Collins Annor appointed as the Physiotherapist. This strong technical and medical team is expected to provide the necessary support to elevate the Black Meteors’ performance as they prepare for upcoming assignments.

Desmond Ofei’s appointment signals a new era for Ghana’s U23 men’s team as they aim to qualify for major international tournaments and groom the next generation of Black Stars players. With his proven credentials at youth level and his experience as a senior national team coach, the Black Meteors will be hoping for a period of stability, growth, and success under his leadership.
