Madrid Forward Rodrygo: Arsenal Pursuit Intensifies in Final Stages

Arsenal’s ambitious attempt to add Real Madrid forward Rodrygo is already one of the summer’s most convoluted transfer sagas. The negotiations are moving quickly while receiving conflicting indications about the long-term plans for the Brazilian. The Gunners are looking for an attacking where they can make an impact. The possibility is that there could be a potential £68m – £85m transfer that will depend on diplomatic negotiations. This includes the attacking fit of the player. Moreover, whether the player is willing to leave European royalty for a central role in Mikel Arteta’s project.

Madrid forward Rodrygo has his status uncertain at Real Madrid has grown increasingly precarious under new manager Xabi Alonso. Alonso has publicly praised him as a “special player” and insisting he remains “important”. However, the 24-year-old was benched for critical Club World Cup matches against Pachuca and RB Salzburg, managing just 23 minutes in the latter. This marginalization follows a season where Rodrygo scored 14 goals but faced criticism for inconsistency under Carlo Ancelotti. Spanish reports now suggest Madrid will sell if Rodrygo doesn’t “wake up” and regain peak form, with the emergence of youngsters Gonzalo Garcia (20) and Franco Mastantuono (17) intensifying competition.

With primary target Nico Williams favoring Barcelona, Arsenal have pivoted decisively to Rodrygo. They are viewing his versatility across the front three as ideal for Arteta’s system . Crucially, the club has developed a sophisticated payment plan to meet Madrid’s €80m (£68m) valuation. An initial €50m (£43m), followed by two €15m (£13m) installments. Reports indicate Madrid would accept this structure if Rodrygo requests an exit.

🚨🔴‼️ Arsenal was confident they could offer Rodrygo a compelling sporting project as a free-roaming left-winger 👀

Behind the scenes, Arsenal leverage key relationships. Scout Paulo Xavier—who helped bring Rodrygo to Madrid in 2019—has engaged the player’s father and agent, exploiting his family connections to advocate for North London. Teammate Gabriel Magalhães has publicly lobbied Rodrygo, calling him a “phenomenon” and admitting, “If it was up to me, of course [I want him at Arsenal]”.

The Brazilian’s stance remains enigmatic. His Instagram post after the Salzburg win—”To the eighth” with a white heart—signaled momentary commitment to Madrid . However, Fichajes claims he and Eduardo Camavinga have “formally requested departures” due to fears of “stagnant growth” under Alonso . Rodrygo reportedly resents playing second fiddle to Vinícius Júnior on the left wing. A role Arsenal would guarantee him, unlike his right-wing accommodations in Spain.

For Arsenal, Rodrygo represents both an upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli (who “struggled to have a lasting impact” in 2024/25) and a tactical wildcard. His ability to play across the frontline offers Arteta fluidity alongside Bukayo Saka and a new striker. Financially, his wages would place him among Arsenal’s highest earners, reflecting his status as a “dream target” for Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta.

Failure to secure Rodrygo could force Arsenal into expensive contingency plans, with Eberechi Eze and Leroy Sané also on their shortlist. Conversely, his arrival might accelerate exits for fringe attackers like Reiss Nelson.

As of June 29, 2025, the deal’s fate rests on Rodrygo’s willingness to confront Alonso and demand a move—a step Fabrizio Romano calls the “only way” negotiations advance. Madrid’s patience is finite; Cadena SER’s Antonio Romero bluntly stated, “If an offer comes in, he’s more out than in”.

For Arsenal, this isn’t merely a talent acquisition—it’s a statement of ambition. Securing a Champions League-proven winner from football’s most storied club would signal their evolution from contenders to apex predators. As talks enter a decisive phase, the Gunners’ resolve faces its ultimate test: convince a Madrid jewel that his legacy belongs in North London.
