Barcelona Are Set To Finalize Nico Williams Amid Arsenal Interest

Barcelona are set to finalize a £51.2 million (€60 million) deal for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams. They having arrived at a verbal agreement on personal terms with the Spanish international. The 22-year-old has declined offers from Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Arsenal in order to focus on signing with the Catalan side. He will sign a six-year deal (€12 million) with bonuses added on top of that in Catalonia.

Williams’ representatives and Barcelona sporting director Deco are set to finalize terms during their meetings in Ibiza. However, the player is accepting a salary significantly lower than offers from rivals. Arsenal reportedly tabled £7.6 million per year (approximately €9 million), while Bayern Munich’s proposal reached €20 million annually. Williams’ desire to join Barcelona stemmed from his close friendship with Spain teammate Lamine Yamal—who played a pivotal role in convincing him—and his eagerness to be part of Camp Nou’s reopening project.

🚨 Nico Williams agreed terms with Barça and now work in progress to get it done club to club.

Athletic Club, however, remains inflexible. They demand Barcelona to pay Williams’ €60 million release clause in full by July 13 to avoid a protracted standoff. The Basque club has ruled out installment payments or negotiations, citing historical tensions with Barcelona, including frosty relations between presidents Jon Uriarte and Joan Laporta.

Despite agreeing to terms, Barcelona are set to navigate La Liga’s strict financial rules to be able to register Williams. The club currently exceeds La Liga’s salary cap. Moreover, they must raise funds or offload players to comply with the “1:1 rule” (spending only as much as their income allows). Recent sales—including Alex Valle (€6 million to Como) and Jean-Clair Todibo (€7.8 million from a sell-on clause)—are insufficient. La Liga president Javier Tebas warned that Barcelona cannot register new signings until they prove financial compliance. A hurdle that previously led to Dani Olmo’s temporary de-registration in January.

Williams’ €12 million salary would make him Barcelona’s 10th-highest earner. Although, well below Robert Lewandowski (€33.3 million) and Lamine Yamal (€16.7 million). The club hopes to finalize the deal before pre-season starts on July 13, sparing Williams an awkward return to Athletic training.

Arsenal had identified Williams as a top target to bolster their attack, with manager Mikel Arteta keen to add dynamism out wide. The Gunners tried to prepare themselves to trigger his release clause but couldn’t compete with Williams’ emotional pull toward Barcelona and Yamal. With Williams off the table, Arsenal will shift focus to alternatives like Real Madrid’s Rodrygo or Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon.

Williams’ arrival promises to reshape Hansi Flick’s attack. The winger led La Liga in take-ons per game (8.4) last season, trailing only Yamal among Europe’s elite dribblers. His traditional wide-left role contrasts with Raphinha’s tendency to drift centrally, potentially freeing the Brazilian to operate as a No. 10. Williams’ relentless pressing (112 high turnovers in 2024–25) also aligns with Flick’s high-intensity system.

The transfer strains Athletic Club’s relationship with Barcelona, mirroring the 2018 Aymeric Laporte saga. Williams’ departure also ends Barcelona’s interest in Liverpool’s Luis Díaz. Moreover, it also likely dashes out Marcus Rashford’s hopes of a Camp Nou move.

For Arsenal, losing Williams underscores the challenge of competing with Barcelona’s prestige despite financial limitations. As the Blaugrana leverage their allure to secure a generational talent, Arteta must pivot swiftly in a crowded transfer market.

Barcelona’s pursuit—fueled by Yamal’s persuasion and Williams’ sacrifice—exemplifies the club’s enduring pull. Yet with Athletic digging in and La Liga’s rules looming, the final €60 million hurdle may test Laporta’s financial ingenuity like never before.
