Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres update stands among Europe’s most in-demand forwards and looks set to become the centre of a massive transfer battle this summer. Now Portugal following a stunning 2024/25 campaign, the 26 year old has been among the most hit players for a host of Premier League clubs chasing a proven marksman.

This Viktor Gyokeres update follows earlier reports that several English clubs — including Arsenal and Chelsea — continue to monitor the striker’s situation closely. In 33 league appearances, Gyokeres scored 29 goals and laid on 9 assists in all competitions, guiding Sporting to a Liga Portugal title under Rúben Amorim. His overall centre-forward play — in terms of link up, pressing and finishing — has been compared to the best of Harry Kane and Edin Džeko in their prime.

After battling injuries earlier in the year, he finished the season in strong form and maintained his momentum. His €100m (£85m) release clause presents a major hurdle. Sporting continue to stand firm on their valuation of Gyokeres, emphasising his key role in their system and pointing to his contract, which runs until 2028.

Sporting, meanwhile, would prefer to keep their talisman for at least another season but the temptation of the Premier League and the financial muscle of English sides may change that. Gyokeres has been keeping his own counsel and recently told a Swedish outlet that he is happy in Lisbon but is open to the next step “if the right project arrives.”

Interest from England is heating up. The Gunners reportedly lead the chase, with Mikel Arteta determined to secure a trusted No.9 who can inject consistent goal threat into his attacking setup. And as good as Kai Havertz has been in the role, the Gunners do not possess a natural striker in the mould of Gyokeres – physical, clinical, and disciplined in his tactical role.

Chelsea, for their part, are monitoring developments too. The Blues are keen to add more of a goal threat up top and believe Gyokeres would fit Enzo Maresca’s system perfectly. But Chelsea can only do business with some big departures of their own with the current spending caps and Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Other potential suitors are Atlético Madrid and AC Milan, though Premier League clubs should be able to outmuscle them financially. So far, no clubs have submitted formal offers, but intermediaries have contacted Sporting. The Portuguese side maintain they won’t engage in discussions unless a serious proposal arrives and the release clause is fully met.

🚨🇸🇪 Viktor Gyökeres’ priority is to join Arsenal this summer despite calls from Manchester United in the recent weeks.

The coming weeks will play a crucial role as clubs finalise their summer strategies. Sporting are preparing for both scenarios—either keeping their star forward or using the funds from a major sale to invest in a quality replacement.

Gyokeres has impressed in multiple leagues and his numbers in Portugal indicate he’s no flash in the pan. He could be the Premier League steel that a top flight side requiring instant impact are after, with a great physical threat and high work rate.

But the cost is still a major impediment. Gyokeres shows serious promise, but spending £85 million on a player untested in England poses a risk — especially with other striker options like Ivan Toney or Benjamin Sesko potentially available at lower prices. Arsenal and Chelsea need to consider whether they can justify a proper No.9 in the context of all of the other squad issues they have.

If a deal come through for less than the release clause or in installments, Gyokeres could be an astute purchase. But clubs need to be wary and ensure they are purchasing whoever they sign is not just goals, but a forward with the adaptability to succeed in Premier League football.
