Premier League: Accra Lions host Bechem United in crunch tie; Medeama seek home comfort against Young Apostles

Accra Lions will be aiming to revive their faltering campaign when they welcome Bechem United to the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday in a crucial matchday 29 fixture of the Ghana Premier League.

Despite showing glimpses of resilience in their recent outing against Heart of Lions, Reiner Kraft’s side fell to a 3-1 defeat — their 13th loss of the season — leaving them 16th on the table with 29 points. The Lions remain mired in the relegation zone, having scored just 24 goals while conceding 31 — the second joint-highest in the league.

Their overall home form paints a grim picture, ranking them as the fourth weakest team at home this season. However, recent results offer a glimmer of hope. They are unbeaten in their last five home matches, picking up four wins and a draw — a streak they’ll be desperate to extend as the season nears its climax.

Bechem United, meanwhile, arrive in the capital under pressure following a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Berekum Chelsea last weekend. That defeat further dented their top-four ambitions, leaving them in eighth place with a modest return of one win from their last five games (D1, L3). The Hunters have scored 28 and conceded 22 goals this season, but their away form is a cause for concern — winless in their last five trips (D1, L4), and lacking the consistency needed for a strong finish.

History, however, favors the hosts. Since the 2021/22 season, Accra Lions have faced Bechem United three times at home in the league, winning twice and drawing once. They claimed a 2-1 win in 2021/22, a goalless draw in 2022/23, and a commanding 3-0 victory last season.

Medeama vs Young Apostles

Medeama SC will look to return to winning ways when they host Premier League debutants Young Apostles at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in what promises to be an intriguing clash.

The Mauve and Yellow have seen their bid to break into the top four stall in recent weeks due to inconsistent form. Medeama’s most recent outing ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat away to league leaders Gold Stars FC — their third away loss in five matches. However, a return to home turf will come as a welcome relief for Ibrahim Tanko’s men, who have turned the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium into a fortress.

With 41 points from 28 games, the Mauve and Yellow have scored the second-highest number of goals in the league (31) while conceding 25. They currently sit mid-table but boast the sixth-best home record. Crucially, Medeama are riding an impressive five-match winning streak at home and will be confident of notching their tenth home victory of the season this weekend.

Young Apostles, arrive in Tarkwa with survival still on their minds. The Wenchi-based side, enjoying their debut top-flight season, sit 13th on the table with 34 points — just five clear of the relegation zone. Their campaign has been hampered by a lack of firepower, with only 19 goals scored and 26 conceded, making them the third-lowest scoring side in the league.

Abdul Bashiru’s men have struggled on the road, managing only two wins in 13 away fixtures (D3, L8). They are ranked among the league’s weakest away teams and head into this clash with just one win from their last five away matches (W1, D1, L3).

Saturday’s encounter will mark the first-ever league meeting between Medeama SC and Young Apostles in Tarkwa since the latter earned promotion. While the visitors will be desperate to inch further away from the drop zone, Medeama will see this as a golden opportunity to reassert themselves at home and push towards a stronger finish to the season.
