Oman‘s playing XI against Hong Kong in a Group B match at the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket tournament featured seven players sharing the Al Balushi surname on September 25, 2026, a coincidence that drew widespread attention. The match was held at Aichi Prefectural Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan.

The seven Al Balushis who took the field were Mohammed Al Balushi, Shuaib Al Balushi, Zubair Al Balushi, Waheed Al Balushi, Issa Al Balushi, Naveed Al Balushi and Faris Al Balushi. Despite the remarkable lineup, Hong Kong defeated Oman by 41 runs. Hong Kong posted 121/8, and Oman were bowled out for 80 in reply.

Of Oman’s 15-member squad for the tournament, as many as nine players carry the Al Balushi surname. Wasim Al Balushi and Qais Al Balushi were the two who did not feature in the playing XI against Hong Kong, with the remaining seven all starting the Group B fixture.

Which Al Balushi players stood out in the match?

Mohammed Al Balushi was the standout performer with the ball for Oman, returning figures of 3/17 against Hong Kong. His contributions have not been limited to this tournament alone. In the Asian Games 2026 men’s qualifier, he scored 81 runs against Bahrain on June 3, 2026, a knock that remains his highest T20I score to date.

Naveed Al Balushi also brought notable credentials into the squad. He claimed 4/22 against Singapore on his international debut during the qualifier campaign, marking him as one of the more promising members of the Al Balushi contingent in Oman’s setup. The two performances together underline that the Al Balushi name carries genuine cricketing weight within this Oman group, not merely numerical curiosity.

What is the format and schedule of the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket tournament?

The men’s cricket tournament at Asian Games 2026 runs from September 24 to October 3, 2026, with the knockout rounds concluding the competition on the final day. Oman have been placed in Group B alongside Hong Kong, China and Malaysia for the group stage.

The September 25 fixture against Hong Kong was Oman’s Group B contest at Korogi Sports Park, and their campaign within the group continues before the knockout phase begins. The tournament is being staged in Japan, and the unusual surname coincidence in Oman’s XI has added a talking point to what is already a competitive multi-nation event across the ten-day window.
