India faced New Zealand in the fifth T20I of their series on November 1, 2026, at Seddon Park in Hamilton. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to bowl first, giving India the opportunity to bat in the opening innings.

Ambati Rayudu, the former Chennai Super Kings batter, offered a strong defence of India captain Shreyas Iyer’s batting credentials during the series. Rayudu emphasised Iyer’s consistent form and match-winning ability, dismissing suggestions that the captain’s performances warranted concern.

“He has always been in good form. When people doubt someone like Shreyas Iyer, it’s pretty laughable, because whenever he bats, he is a match-winner. He just takes the premier bowlers on, it is not like he is stitching up an innings where he is struggling and then he goes about hitting a few boundaries. He just dominates the innings, he controls the innings, so he is a fantastic, fantastic batter,” Rayudu said on Cricbuzz.

Iyer’s explosive performance in the fifth T20I

Iyer’s performance in the fifth T20I underscored Rayudu’s assessment. The India captain scored 50 off 23 deliveries, contributing significantly to India’s batting effort. His aggressive approach formed part of a crucial partnership with Ishan Kishan, who scored 61 off 32 balls. Together, Kishan and Iyer counterattacked with a 93-run partnership off just 43 deliveries, helping India post 191 for 8 wickets in their innings.

Iyer’s half-century came at a remarkable pace. His 22-ball fifty set a record, becoming the fastest half-century by an Indian captain against New Zealand in T20Is, surpassing Suryakumar Yadav’s 23-ball effort in Raipur in 2026. This milestone highlighted Iyer’s aggressive captaincy and batting approach in the series.

Kartik’s analysis of Iyer’s technical adjustments

Former India cricketer Murali Kartik also analysed Iyer’s technical adjustments and mindset. Kartik noted that Iyer had worked on his batting approach to counter specific challenges he had faced earlier in his career, particularly against short-pitched bowling.

“There was a phase where people were targeting him with short balls, and you look at the new Shreyas Iyer, he has got the two-eyed stance, an open stance, and he is constantly flapping his bat in the air as a trigger movement. He has worked on what needs to be done, given his own body structure and stance. So, these are things which you look at. There are times where he tries the odd, and sometimes on the given day his changes might not give him the best timing on the given day. But the most important thing is, when you back yourself on sound fundamentals, you are always going to have better days,” Kartik said.

Iyer’s recent form had been strong before this series. On October 6, 2026, he scored his maiden T20I century, an unbeaten 102 against the West Indies in Lucknow, marking a significant milestone in his international career.
