West Brom interested in ex-Man Utd coach Ramsay

West Bromwich Albion are interested in former Manchester United coach Eric Ramsay as they look to fill their managerial vacancy.

The Baggies sacked head coach Ryan Mason on Tuesday after a 10th successive away defeat left them 18th in the Championship table, seven points above the relegation zone.

The club are looking to make an appointment before their next league game on Friday, 16 January when they host second-placed Middlesbrough.

Ramsay, 33, is currently in his first senior managerial role with Major League Soccer side Minnesota United, leading them to back-to-back Conference play-off semi-finals.

He also guided the team to their highest place league finish of fourth in the Western Conference last season.

Prior to his move to the United States, the Shrewsbury-born Welshman was a first-team coach at Manchester United under Eric ten Hag and took on an assistant coach role with the Wales men’s team.

Ramsay was linked with Albion in the summer before the head coach role was eventually given to Mason.

This is not the first-time the 33-year-old’s name has been linked with Albion. The Welsh coach has been on the club’s shortlist for a while, including during their most recent search, which led them to Ryan Mason.

The former Tottenham assistant was also 33 when he was appointed by Albion in June. Both were also midfielders.

But while one-time England international Mason was forced to retire at the top level because of injury, Ramsay chose to give up playing in the Welsh Premier League to focus on a career as a coach.

As a result, the Loughborough University graduate has a more impressive CV.

He’s received praise for his work in academies at Swansea, Shrewsbury and Chelsea, and at senior level with Manchester United and the Wales national team.

His Minnesota United team, who he has coached since 2024, doesn’t dominate possession and focuses on attacking in transition. It’s with that style of play that he has guided them to the MLS play-offs in back-to-back campaigns.

The play-offs are a lofty ambition for the Baggies right now with the team 18th in the Championship, leaving Albion supporters more worried about relegation.

For that reason, they will have concerns about sporting director and president Andrew Nestor taking a second gamble in a row on another youngster, especially halfway through a campaign.

However, there’s a reason why Ramsay is reportedly attracting interest from several clubs across Europe, including the briefly vacant Strasbourg job.

And with the new MLS season starting next month, the Baggies hierarchy need to act fast to tempt Ramsay to their hot seat if he is the man they want.
