We’re staying humble, we’re not going to let anything get to our heads – Jerome Opoku

Defender Jerome Opoku says Ghana are using the doubters as fuel after a 0-0 World Cup draw with England, with the centre back admitting to prove people wrong gives me a buzz. Opoku was one of Ghana’s standouts at Gillette Stadium as the Black Stars held England to frustrate Thomas Tuchel’s side and move to four points in Group L.

Speaking post-match, the defender said coach Carlos Queiroz’s belief has been key. “I’ve always had this in me. It’s just about having the opportunity and the confidence that the coach has given me. And I appreciate it all,” Opoku said.

“I appreciate the love from the fans. And we’re going to continue to stay grounded.”

Asked if Ghana were now playing for something historic after a result few expected, Opoku didn’t shy away from the criticism the squad has faced.

“Ghanaians didn’t really think this team was that good, did they? Some people saying this is the worst, honest with you, history,” he said. “And so, me and the boys were talking about it.”

“Through my life, I’ve been an underdog. So, there’s nothing unusual. You know, that’s my being doubted. It’s been my habit. So, in my habitat. To prove people wrong — I get a buzz from it. And so does the team.”

“Now we’re showing the fans, showing the world what we can do.”

Opoku said Ghana prepared specifically for England’s attack and executed the plan.

“We prepared for what they had. We saw their quality, their attacking quality, the runs, and I think we just defended really well. Good luck to them.”

On whether he was surprised England couldn’t break Ghana down, he added:

“I wouldn’t say surprised because I’ll be kind of doubting myself. But I just think they’re a good team and they tried their best, we tried our best and the result speaks for itself.”

Despite the result putting Ghana on the brink of the Round of 32, Opoku said the squad won’t get carried away before facing Croatia on June 28.

“I’m good, positive. I told you before. The vibe’s good, man,” he said. “We’re staying humble. We’re focusing on the next game. We’re not going to let anything get to our heads. We’re going to continue.”
