'We will see about it' - Rohit Sharma breaks silence on 2027 ODI World Cup participation amid ongoing speculation

Former India captain Rohit Sharma has finally addressed the speculation surrounding his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup. With the mega event still more than a year away, the veteran batter admitted that there is plenty of time before a decision needs to be made.

Rohit was asked about his plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup during an event at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai on Thursday. The 38-year-old gave a brief response, making it clear that he is not looking too far ahead at this stage.

“October 2027 is far away, we will see about it then,” Rohit said when asked whether he would feature in the tournament.

The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Rohit’s comments come amid considerable speculation over his international future, especially after he retired from T20Is and Tests. However, he continues to be available for India in the ODI format.

Rohit was also asked whether India could have an open-bus parade if they win the 2027 ODI World Cup, similar to the celebrations following their 2024 T20 World Cup triumph in Mumbai.

“….I do not think a bus parade would be possible now,” he replied.

Rohit played a key role in India’s ODI series against England earlier this year, scoring a century in his final outing. He smashed 138 runs in the last ODI, further strengthening his case for continuing in the format.

“He is playing superbly in all matches. So what more do you want? In the last match (against England), he scored 138 runs, so why is there speculation? I do not want to give some fodder for the speculators,” Saikia told reporters after the BCCI’s review meeting at its headquarters.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup still some time away, Rohit’s latest comments suggest that he is keeping his options open rather than making any immediate commitment about his participation in the tournament.
