Bangladesh senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin has cautioned his team against taking Malaysia lightly ahead of their Asian Games quarter-final encounter on Tuesday, September 29. The warning reflects a measured approach as Bangladesh prepare for a knockout-stage match where a single defeat ends their tournament campaign.

Salahuddin drew on his experience working in Malaysia to assess the opposition and the unpredictable nature of tournament cricket. He explained that when multiple matches are contested on identical pitches, the toss often becomes a decisive factor, creating conditions where unexpected results can occur. The Bangladesh camp has been preparing mentally for a competitive contest rather than an assured victory.

“Upsets can happen in this type of tournament because matches are played repeatedly on the same wicket. As a result, the toss often becomes a major factor,” Salahuddin told reporters.

Every single match is important: Salahuddin

The two teams have met previously at an Asian Games quarter-final, where Bangladesh defended a total of 116 and won by 2 runs. Litton Das captains the Bangladesh side in the tournament.

Recalling the nail-biting encounter, Salahuddin said that each game is very crucial for Bangladesh and there is no room for complacency or overconfidence.

“Every single match is extremely important. We shouldn’t assume a win beforehand; we have to win it on the field. That is how we are mentally preparing ourselves,” he said.

The weight of national expectation adds another dimension to Bangladesh’s campaign. The Bangladesh women’s team returned from the Asian Games without a medal, placing additional significance on the men’s team’s performance. Salahuddin acknowledged this responsibility while expressing confidence in his squad’s preparation and mindset.

“The whole country is looking at us to bring home a medal. The boys have that motivation, and we understand the weight of this responsibility. There is no shortage of motivation on our part, and Inshallah, we will do well,” Salahuddin said.

Pakistan will face Hong Kong, China, in the first quarter-final on Monday, September 28. Meanwhile, India will take on Afghanistan later on the same day. On Tuesday, apart from the Bangladesh versus Malaysia fixture, there is also another quarter-final, which will be played between Sri Lanka and Nepal.
