Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Urvil Patel mesmerised the Chepauk crowd after scoring the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) joint-fastest half-century against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Sunday, May 10.

The right-handed batter scored 50 off just 13 balls to go level with the Rajasthan Royals’ opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. Urvil scored five consecutive sixes, followed by a boundary to make sure he was in with a chance to create history at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

After reaching his record-equalling half-century, Urvil’s celebration was emotional. Firstly, he joined his hands to thank the faithful Chennai crowd before pulling out a piece of paper from his pocket and portraying it for everyone to see.

“This is for you, Papa,” read the piece of paper carried by Urvil, followed by an emotional message in Gujarati.

Urvil Patel’s celebration after this 13-ball half-century can be seen below:

Ever since he walked out to bat after the wicket of Sanju Samson, it seemed like Urvil was set from the get-go. He hit three consecutive sixes off the bowling of Avesh Khan, before striking two more in the very next over, bowled by Digvesh Rathi.

Urvil went on to score 65 off just 23 balls, scoring at a strike-rate of 282.61, hitting two fours and eight massive sixes. The Gujarat batter was eventually dismissed by Shahbaz Ahmed in the 10th over, after hitting a ball straight to extra cover, where Avesh was stationed.

The CSK batter equalled the record held by Jaiswal for nearly three years. The RR batter first scored a 13-ball 50 back during the 2023 IPL season against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens. On that occasion, Jaiswal ended up scoring an unbeaten 98 off just 47 deliveries to score at a strike-rate of 208.51.

This was only the fourth game Urvil has played in the IPL this season. Before his heroics against LSG, his top score in this year’s tournament was just 24, which he scored against the Mumbai Indians. However, after today, he has forever registered his name in the CSK folklore.
