[WATCH] IPL 2026: Lungi Ngidi reattempts risky backward catch, pulls it off one-handed this time

Delhi Capitals (DC) pacer Lungi Ngidi has made a confident return to practice after recovering from a frightening on-field accident. The incident had raised serious concerns, but the fast bowler now appears to be in good spirits ahead of DC’s clash against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on May 1 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

During a recent training session, Ngidi was seen participating in catching drills, showing no signs of hesitation. In a moment that caught everyone’s attention, he confidently completed a one-handed catch while running backwards, reminiscent of the attempt that led to his earlier injury during a match against Punjab Kings (PBKS). This time, however, he executed it perfectly and even shared a laugh afterward, much to the surprise and delight of his teammates.

DC shared the video on social media with a caption highlighting the meaning of his name, Lungisani, which translates to ‘rectify and set things right’ in Zulu.

There’s a reason why Lungisani means ‘𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁’ in Zulu 🥹 pic.twitter.com/zfXWZSpFWl

The incident occurred earlier when Axar Patel was bowling and Priyansh Arya miscued a shot high into the air. Ngidi tracked the ball while running backwards but lost his balance while attempting the catch. He fell heavily, with his head striking the turf, immediately appearing to be in severe discomfort. Medical staff rushed onto the field, and he was attended to by doctors and emergency personnel before being stretchered off and taken to a nearby hospital with complaints of neck pain and a headache.

Fortunately, Ngidi provided a reassuring update the following day, confirming that he was fine. He resumed practice on April 30 but is expected to return to competitive action only after completing the mandatory concussion recovery protocols.

As for Delhi Capitals, their campaign has been inconsistent so far. They currently sit seventh on the points table with three wins from eight matches and are on a three-game losing streak. The team will be eager to bounce back against Rajasthan Royals and regain momentum in the tournament.
