Rohit Sharma gave a masterclass on hitting unorthodox shots like scoop and lap shots ahead of the 69th match of the IPL 2025 between MI and PBKS. Rohit demonstrated the way of batting fearlessly, and the risks involved in hitting such shots with the broadcasters. The star batter described the difference between a scoop shot and a lap shot.
The MI opener said that a lap shot is the one where the batter just guides the ball over the keeperās head with a firm stance. Sharma added that the scoop shot is the one where the batter must get on their knees and under the ball to get proper elevation to dispatch the ball over the keeperās head.

Rohit took the example of Jos Buttler as the one to execute lap shots often. He claimed that Buttler moves away in the crease and gets his bat in contact with the ball to guide it over the keeperās head. The star batter claimed that both shots have their own challenges in execution.

The five-time IPL winning captain claimed that playing lap standing with a still stance was tougher, as he felt it would not be easy to get enough elevation that way. However, the Nagpur-born also felt that a scoop shot would not risk him exposing his stumps and would give a better coordination to hit the ball.

Sharma has been in fine form after failing to perform in the first 3 matches of the IPL 2025. The 38-year-old has been the third-highest run-scorer for his team, doing a fine job at the top. He has provided good starts despite being a bit inconsistent.
In 13 innings, the right-handed batter has 329 runs at an average of 27.41, at a good strike rate of 147.53, including three half-centuries as well. In their upcoming match, MI will be up against either Royal Challengers Bengaluru or Gujarat Titans for the Eliminator at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh on Saturday, May 31.
