Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls against West Indies in the first ODI at Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, 2026, hitting his 10th ODI century against that opposition. The knock equalled his own record of 10 centuries against Sri Lanka, making him the only batter in ODI history with double-digit hundreds against two separate opponents. India won the match by 8 wickets.

The innings came at a strike rate of 157.95 and contained 10 fours and 9 sixes. Kohli reached three figures off 74 balls, the third-fastest ODI hundred of his career. The century was his 55th in ODI cricket, extending his world record ahead of Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 49. During the course of the innings, Kohli also crossed 15,000 ODI runs, becoming only the second batter in history to reach that milestone after Tendulkar.

How does Kohli’s record against individual opponents compare?

The record table for most ODI centuries against a single opponent now places Kohli at the top in two separate columns. He has 10 hundreds against Sri Lanka and 10 against West Indies. The next-best tallies belong to Tendulkar, who hit 9 centuries against Australia, and Rohit Sharma, who also has 9 against Australia. Kohli himself has 8 ODI centuries against Australia, while Tendulkar scored 8 against Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli on aggressive approach vs West Indies

No other batter in ODI history has reached double figures in centuries against even one opponent, let alone two. Kohli’s achievement against West Indies on September 27 therefore stands as a unique statistical landmark in the format, one that separates him from every other batter who has played the game.

What partnerships drove India’s 8-wicket win?

Kohli’s unbeaten 139 was built on two substantial partnerships. He added 151 runs in 132 balls with Shubman Gill for the second wicket, providing India with a firm platform after the early stages of the chase. Kohli then put on a further 75 runs in just 46 balls with Ruturaj Gaikwad for the third wicket, accelerating India sharply towards the target.

The two stands together accounted for 226 runs and effectively settled the contest well before the final overs. The manner in which Kohli shifted through the gears — building steadily with Gill before launching into a higher tempo alongside Gaikwad — illustrated the control he maintained throughout the innings. India completed an 8-wicket victory at Thiruvananthapuram with considerable ease.
