Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League Final to end their trophy drought. It was a resilient performance from the north London clubs. Tottenham have had a disastrous league campaign by their standards, but they put that behind in the Europa League final.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has been criticised for his lack of tactical flexibility the entire season. The North London giants have conceded far too many goals for a team of their stature. However, they have managed to defend in exceptional fashion in Europe. Tottenham Hotspur managed to keep a clean sheet in the away leg of the Europa League quarter-finals and semi-finals. Ange Postecoglou’s men went on to carry this form into the final, where they managed to keep another clean sheet.

Tottenham Hotspurs’ top goalscorer this season, Brennan Johnson, popped up again with a goal in the first half. This turned out to be the historic goal which broke Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought. This was also the only shot on target for Tottenham in the entire match.

This was a display of grit and determination from Ange’s men which was more than worthy of a trophy. Tottenham had James Maddison, Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall missing through injury. These three midfielders are the principal sources of creativity for Tottenham in the attacking part of the pitch.

For Tottenham to overcome these absences and go on to win the tournament against the odds is a monumental achievement. Manchester United were deemed to be the favourites before the final due to their European heritage. However, it is safe to say that Tottenham performed out of their wits to secure their first European title this century.

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United were both under immense pressure to win this final. This tournament was seen as a saving grace for two clubs who have been well below their level this season. While Tottenham did manage to secure the win, there was even more agony for Manchester United fans.

Both managers have been under scrutiny for their stubbornness and inability to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. There were calls from a section of both the fanbases to sack their managers regardless of the outcome.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is in his second season at Tottenham Hotspur. He has been adamant throughout the season that he always wins a trophy in his second season. These statements were perceived as tone-deaf by the media and fans alike after Tottenham’s performances this season. However, Ange has managed to etch this quote into eternity by delivering European silverware to Tottenham.

This win also has serious positive implications for Tottenham Hotspur off the pitch. Spurs will now be receiving the Champions League bonus money. This will help them to build a strong squad depth for next season. They need this because they cannot let another Premier League season go down the drain due to injuries.

Tottenham Hotspur securing a Champions League spot also enables them to attract talented players. This victory not only helps with the finances but also increases the stature of the club in the player’s eyes. It is safe to say Ange Postecoglou did do what he set out to do when he took charge. This is to deliver a trophy to Tottenham Hotspur after a major trophy drought. Whether he stays or leaves, his name is written in Tottenham’s history for eternity.

Winning European silverware is obviously huge for any club. However, for Tottenham Hotspur, this trophy destroys the mental roadblock amongst the fans and players alike. The Europa League trophy changes the landscape of the entire club. Now Tottenham Hotspur are the clubs who can get stuff over the line. Their days of being nearly men are behind them now.

This trophy has instilled a feeling of euphoria and optimism in the fans after a disastrous league campaign. The club needs to ensure that it uses this trophy as a foundation upon which a winning culture is built. Tottenham must ensure that this success is not just an aberration, but an event which catapults them to the next level.
