India secured a four-wicket victory against New Zealand in the opening T20I at Christchurch on October 23, 2026, chasing down a target of 226 runs in 19.4 overs. The hosts had posted 225 for 4 in their 20 overs, with New Zealand’s batting display powered by Glenn Phillips’ unbeaten 82 off 40 balls, Finn Allen’s 45 off 24 balls and Bevon Jacobs’ 31 off 16 balls.

During India’s chase, Sanju Samson played an attacking 67 off 33 balls with eight fours and four sixes, while Abhishek Sharma contributed 29 off 12 balls with two fours and three sixes in a 93-run opening partnership. However, India slipped to 122 for 4 before skipper Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel steadied the innings with a 45-run stand. Iyer scored 42 off 28 balls with four fours and two sixes before his dismissal left India in a spot of bother in the closing stages of the match

Naman Dhir then took charge, smashing an unbeaten 42 off just 15 balls with five fours and two sixes to seal the win with two balls remaining. Speaking about his finishing role, Dhir reflected on his approach during the critical moments. He explained that the situation required clarity rather than complexity in execution.

“Actually, at that time we discussed that if we hit two good shots, just proper cricketing shots, two boundaries, then the game would end right there. And yeah, we got those two crucial fours. There was not really anything to overcomplicate; we just needed to hit two good cricketing shots at that point, nothing else,” Dhir said while speaking in a video shared by the BCCI.

Dhir acknowledged the role of skipper Iyer in setting the tone for the chase and the importance of adapting to match situations. He noted that T20 cricket is situational and requires players to adjust their approach based on the phase of play. Earlier this month, during a rain-curtailed T20I against West Indies at home, Dhir had struck a quickfire 24 not out where he could attack from the outset, but the Christchurch chase demanded a different strategy.

“I just wanted to continue on the pitch. And I guess T20 games, white-ball, are situational. There the situation was different (in the rain-curtailed T20I against West Indies at home where he smacked a quickfire 24*); there you could go and hit a six right away, but here it was a bit different. So I was trying to adapt my game accordingly,” Dhir said.

“Winning a game for India is obviously a proud feeling, and especially since I am still young and new to the team, so it is very satisfying. And Gautam sir also talked about it in the dressing room: if you set the tone right from the beginning, it helps you further along. So I guess it is a very good win for all of us,” he added.

How did Naman Dhir approach the final overs?

Dhir thanked Indian fans for their attendance and support, calling it a great feeling to play in front of home supporters on foreign soil. He expressed hope that supporters would continue backing the team in upcoming matches.

“Wherever you go in any part of the world, so there is no bigger blessing for us than that. I would say come to the next match as well, support us like this, and let us see even more blue here,” Dhir said.
