'There is no identity within the team' - Ex-RCB batter throws heavy criticism towards LSG after loss against Delhi Capitals

Former India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Abhinav Mukund has made a critical analysis of the Lucknow Super Giants after the franchise faced a massive loss in their IPL 2026 opener. Facing Axar Patel-led Delhi Capitals, LSG failed to defend the 144-run target to concede their first match of the season at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium, Lucknow, on Wednesday, April 01.

Mukund has said that he is not too sure about the strengths and weaknesses of the Lucknow-based side. He drew a direct comparison between LSG and Gujarat Titans, saying that the latter team has been far more impressive despite not carrying an ultra-aggressive mindset. He feels that Lucknow, as a team, lacks identity.

“I’m very unsure about LSG. They are a very young side in the IPL. So are Gujarat Titans, who are slowly building an identity towards who they are. They might have lost their first game, but you know what Gujarat Titans will come up with on a certain day. They are top-heavy. They rely on their bowlers. They rely on their experience in the middle in terms of their spinners. With Lucknow, you always feel like there is no identity within the team,” Mukund told ESPNCricinfo.

Despite a strong performance in the first couple of seasons in the IPL in 2022 and 2023, LSG failed to clinch a title. With a revamped approach and changed identity, the results are still nowhere to be seen for the franchise compared to the GT, who made their IPL entry at the same time but won a title in their first attempt and have made it to the playoffs thrice, including two finale appearances as well.

LSG will play their next match on April 05 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in an encounter that is scheduled to be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. It will be quite interesting to see if the Rishabh Pant-led side manages to get back on track in their IPL 2026 campaign, as the franchise still awaits their first IPL silverware.
