Jhye Richardson is preparing for a significant step in his Test cricket comeback as Australia A prepares to face India A in two four-day matches in Puducherry. The Western Australian pacer underwent full shoulder reconstruction in early 2025 and has set his sights on returning to the Test arena after a lengthy injury layoff. Richardson’s focus now centres on performing well in the upcoming unofficial matches before potentially earning selection for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy next year.
Richardson expressed his determination to return to Test cricket during recent comments. The pacer has been working towards this goal throughout his rehabilitation and recovery period. His preparation has included a stint with Yorkshire during the county season, where he took six wickets across seven innings at an average of 66.33. He also completed the Global Super League in Guyana before turning his attention to the Australia A assignment.
“That’s always the plan – to play Test cricket ,” Richardson said on the sidelines of the Big Bash League event in Chennai, according to Cricinfo.
Richardson’s focus on the Puducherry assignment
Richardson’s most recent Test appearance came in December 2025 when Australia faced England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. During that match, he produced a key dismissal with an inswinger, demonstrating his ability to perform at the highest level despite the time away from the format. His Test career has spanned four matches since his debut against Sri Lanka in January 2019.
Richardson remains focused on the immediate challenge ahead while keeping his longer-term ambitions in view. The upcoming Puducherry assignment represents a crucial opportunity to demonstrate his fitness and bowling pace following the shoulder reconstruction. George Bailey, Australia’s chair of selectors, had previously raised questions about whether Richardson could return to bowling at speeds of 140 kilometres per hour and above.
“That [Border-Gavaskar Trophy] is always in the background. My mentality this year is just to be where my feet are. That’s in Chennai right now and then in Puducherry for two four-day games against India A. Hopefully get through those two games and ultimately if I perform well, I can play Test cricket again.” Richardson said.
Richardson turns 30 on September 22, just two days before the first Australia A match against India A begins in Puducherry. The milestone birthday carries weight for any professional athlete, particularly one returning from major surgery. Richardson reflected on the pressures of age and injury in his recent comments.
“It [turning 30] is quite scary knowing careers can end abruptly. But I am still feeling strong in myself, and I’m enjoying the game and playing for my country. Senior bowler, junior – whatever it is – it doesn’t bother me too much as long as I am enjoying my cricket,” Richardson said.
Adam Voges, the Western Australia and Perth Scorchers coach, has backed Richardson’s fitness and readiness for the challenges ahead. Voges has observed Richardson’s preparation closely and expressed confidence in the pacer’s physical condition as he pursues his Test comeback. The coach’s assessment provides an independent perspective on Richardson’s recovery from shoulder reconstruction.
“I think I’m really excited and optimistic for Jhye [ahead of the new season]. He has had his troubles with injuries and his body, but looking at him at the moment, he is probably as fit and strong as I have seen him. And I think that will give him a great opportunity,” the former Australian batter said.
