Tennis is charting a new course for itself. The ATP’s recent proposal to downsize the doubles field from the 2028 season onwards could have ramifications beyond the discipline.
The news broke out a few weeks ago during the Wimbledon Championships. As per the proposal, doubles draw will be halved in size, gutting the field from 32 teams to just 16 teams at the ATP Masters 1000 level, and from 16 teams to just eight teams at the ATP 500 and 250 level. The prize money will be reduced from the current 20 percent to 10 percent on the total prize pot.
