Steve Smith has been cleared of a concussion and resumed fielding duties on day five of the first Test between Australia and South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban. He was present in the slip cordon from the opening delivery of the day on October 13, 2026, having taken catches in the warm-up session before play began.

The clearance followed a further concussion assessment conducted over the 24 hours after day four. Smith had been struck on the helmet by an Anrich Nortje bouncer during Australia’s second innings, with the blow arriving on the fifth ball of the 13th over. Cricket Australia confirmed that Nortje was bowling at 150.1 km/h throughout that day’s play.

Smith was assessed on the field immediately after the incident and was permitted to continue batting. He made 27 off 41 balls before being caught at long-on off Simon Harmer. When South Africa came out to bat in their second innings later that day, Smith was absent from the field, with Michael Neser serving as substitute fielder in his place.

What did Cricket Australia’s concussion protocol require?

Cricket Australia’s concussion and head trauma policy states that any player who receives a concussion diagnosis must observe a minimum 24-hour stand-down period and cannot return to cricket-related activity without clearance from a medical officer. Smith’s withdrawal from fielding duties during South Africa’s second innings on day four was in line with that requirement while his assessment was ongoing.

His appearance at first slip from ball one on day five confirmed that the Australian medical staff were satisfied he had met every condition for return. No official timestamp for the clearance was provided by Cricket Australia, and that detail remains unresolved.

What is at stake for Australia on the final day?

South Africa were set a target of 421 runs after Australia declared before the Tea interval on day four, a record chase at this venue. Heading into the final day, Australia needed six more wickets to seal victory and move 1-0 ahead in the series.

The second Test is scheduled to begin in Gqeberha on Sunday. Smith’s return to the field means Australia expect to have him available for that match, which could see them seal the series.
