Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has opened up about his return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and his experience playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) under the leadership of Australian skipper Pat Cummins. SRH are preparing for a must-win clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 5 to stay alive in the playoff race.

Shami, who missed IPL 2024 due to an ankle injury, made his return this season after being bought by SRH for a whopping INR 10 crore. However, his comeback has not been up to expectations. Once the Purple Cap holder in IPL 2023 with 28 wickets, Shami has managed just six wickets in nine games at an economy rate of 11.23 and an average of 56.17.

His recent performance against the Gujarat Titans, against whom he conceded 48 runs in just three overs, and an earlier outing against Punjab Kings, where he leaked 74 in four overs (second-worst in IPL history), has received criticism over his fitness and form. However, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori has backed him, quashing injury concerns. The ace speedster reflected on joining SRH despite his recent struggles.

ā€œSRH has completely changed my perspective—what used to be a 200-run target now feels like 300. They’ve redefined the game. As for my role, I want to be part of a team that sets new benchmarks and shifts mindsets. I feel I’ve joined a strong unit, and I’m focused on contributing my best. We’ve built a strong bowling unit as well at SRH — a solid pace attack and quality spinners to back it. Overall, our bowling is much more balanced now, and those who think SRH is only about batting are mistaken,ā€ he said exclusively on JioHotstar’s special series ā€œGen Goldā€.

Speaking about Cummins, Shami praised the Australian’s leadership qualities and revealed that he brings immense experience to the table and is a bowler’s captain, understanding the pressure.Ā

“Calmness is key in leadership. A calm captain can bring out the best in his players. Knowing each player’s potential is crucial, and Pat Cummins does that exceptionally well. Having captained for years, he has the experience, and managing both international and young players comes naturally to him,” he said.

He also pointed out the importance of IPL as a platform for young talent.

“IPL is a great platform for youngsters to showcase their character, potential, and skills. It’s encouraging to see them step up — it shows how bright the future of Indian cricket really is. There’s no shortage of talent coming through this league,” he added.

Meanwhile, as SRH face DC at home, the match is important for both sides. With only six points from ten games, SRH are on the brink of elimination but remain mathematically alive. A win on Monday could give them a slim chance. Delhi, with 12 points, is also in a tight spot after a mid-season dip in form.Ā
