Travis Head has responded firmly to criticism levelled at Australia’s batting selections by former players, defending the current squad ahead of the first Test against South Africa in Durban scheduled for Friday. The Australian opener addressed concerns raised in recent days about the team’s approach to player development and selection strategy.

Head spoke to Yahoo News Australia about the nature of criticism coming from past cricketers. He acknowledged that former players have questioned the direction of Australian cricket, with some suggesting the selectors are promoting players who do not meet traditional standards.

“I think it’s unfairly judged a fair bit from a group of past players, pretty much that put the bullet through a lot of players, which I think is unfair. But that’s what they’re paid to do. Some of them need a job, so they go after us, and that’s totally fine,” said Head as quoted by The West Australian.

How Head views media scrutiny and performance cycles?

Head pointed to his own record since moving to the opening position as evidence that the current batting group deserves more measured assessment. He has averaged 52.10 at the top of the order since taking on the role as a makeshift solution in Perth in late 2025. The broader context for the criticism centres on concerns about Australia’s reliance on a small group of established batters, with test batting averages across the sport having dropped by close to 20 per cent from the end of the 2010s.

The opener acknowledged that media coverage and public perception can shift rapidly based on individual performances. He noted that a single poor outing can overshadow a strong run of form, and conversely, a good performance may not silence all doubts about a player’s suitability for a particular position.

“I have laughed at a fair bit of it because if a traditional opening batter had pushed out the same sort of numbers in his first 20 innings, I think he’d be pretty safe and not talked about in the way that it has been talked about. But I think that’s a bit of the media these days: it’s not so much a good day, bad day, it’s a lot of headline stuff. I had a great summer, missed out first day in Darwin, and I’m no good at it again. So that doesn’t bother me the slightest,” said Head.

“If people want to read it and are happy and not having a dig, but people are going to click on it if it’s drawing the line through someone. I’ve played long enough to know that that happens. More of that will happen Friday if I open the batting and miss out. The same question marks. Vice versa, if I play well, they’ll probably still think I should go to five. But that’s up to you guys. This group is strong enough to deal with those sort of things. That’s how it is,” he added.

Head emphasised that the squad possesses the mental resilience to handle external scrutiny and competing narratives. He stressed that the team remains unified in its commitment to performing at the highest level, regardless of commentary from outside observers.

“They’re a very proud bunch of guys. We went through a bit of a sticky situation a few years ago, where they stood up and were pretty proud about one of their own. But in saying that, we’re all one of each. We play for the same cause. We have huge respect for it. It’s always a balancing act with the, I guess, what they say and how you take it. It’s unfortunate sometimes to have some of that feedback from a generation of players that we have huge respect for, but that’s the caper,” Head concluded.
