Batter Shreyas Iyer has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association that he will be playing the next two Vijay Hazare Trophy games for Mumbai. “Iyer has informed us that he has got the clearance from the Centre of Excellence (COE) today, and he can take part in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy game. He will be added for the last two games now, which are scheduled to be played on January 6 and 8,” MCA secretary Dr Unmesh Khanvilkar told The Indian Express. Iyer will be playing Mumbai’s last two league games against Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, scheduled to be held in Jaipur. He will fly to the city on Sunday to link up with the rest of the Mumbai squad. The 31-year-old suffered a fatal injury last October while attempting to take a diving catch in the third India vs Australia ODI in Sydney to dismiss Alex Carey. He was admitted to a Sydney hospital for a laceration of the spleen with internal bleeding. The injury forced him to miss three months of international cricket, and his recovery wasn’t rushed by the medical team. The extent of Iyer’s injury was such that his oxygen levels dropped to 50, and for ten minutes, he wasn’t able to stand properly. There was a complete blackout around him, and it took him some time to come back to normal. As per board’s policy on ‘return to play protocol’, he spent ten days at the CoE in Bengaluru, where he played a practice game. He passed all physical tests, and then he was cleared by the medical team to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy. India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and all-rounder Shivam Dube are also likely to feature in both matches next week, with their next national assignment being the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, starting in Nagpur on January 21.
