Shreyas Iyer etched his name into the record books at Sano International Cricket Ground, becoming the first captain from any Full Member nation to elect to bat in a five-over T20 International. The one-off fixture between India and Japan was curtailed to five overs a side after persistent rain repeatedly halted play, and Iyer’s toss decision set a precedent in international cricket.

Iyer explained the thinking behind the call, saying it was to test the conditions and familiarise the squad with the local pitches ahead of the broader campaign. The move, however, very nearly backfired on the reigning T20 World Cup champions.

How did India’s batters cope with the difficult conditions?

The pitch at Sano offered sharp turn from the opening delivery, and India’s top order was unable to cope. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan combined for only 12 runs between them, leaving the innings in a precarious state. Iyer himself provided the steadiest contribution, striking 16 off 12 balls, a knock that accounted for exactly half of India’s total.

The Men in Blue were eventually restricted to 32 for 4 across their five overs, a target that was modest by any measure. Japan’s Charlie Hara-Hinze was the most effective bowler on display, removing two batters in two overs while conceding 17 runs. The total left India’s bowlers with little margin for error in the second half of the contest, and the pressure on the bowling unit was considerable given how little the batters had managed on a surface that offered generous assistance to the spinners from the very first ball.

How did Axar Patel seal the win for India in the final over?

Japan’s batters made a genuine contest of the chase. By the close of the fourth over, the hosts had progressed to 25 for 3, leaving them eight runs short of victory with one over remaining. The equation gave Japan a realistic opportunity to pull off a significant upset against the world champions, and the tension inside Sano International Cricket Ground was palpable as the final over began.

Axar Patel was entrusted with bowling that decisive final over. The all-rounder kept his composure under pressure and conceded only five runs, denying Japan the runs they needed and securing a two-run win for India. The victory was also notable for another reason: it marked the first T20 International between these two nations at Sano International Cricket Ground, adding a further layer of historical significance to an already landmark occasion for cricket in Japan.
