UNICEF India announced Smriti Mandhana as Celebrity Advocate on Sunday, October 11, 2026, marking the International Day of the Girl. The appointment comes days after Mandhana took over as India women’s cricket captain following Harmanpreet Kaur’s decision to step down. Mandhana, an Arjuna Award recipient, will support UNICEF India’s efforts to empower adolescent girls, promote their health and well-being, and enable them to reach their full potential.
The role aims to strengthen initiatives that create equal opportunities for girls, particularly in sports. Mandhana’s appointment reflects her standing as a global cricket figure and her platform to advocate for children’s rights beyond the playing field.
Tendulkar’s message on Mandhana’s appointment
Sachin Tendulkar, who serves as UNICEF Ambassador for South Asia, responded to the announcement on social media, praising her commitment to the cause.
“Welcome to the @UNICEFIndia family, @mandhana_smriti! You inspire millions on the field, and I know you will be a brilliant voice for children’s rights off it,” Tendulkar wrote on X.

Mandhana’s appointment reflects her earlier involvement with UNICEF India initiatives. Her new role as Celebrity Advocate formalises her commitment to advancing girls’ rights and leadership across India.
Mandhana on joining UNICEF India as Celebrity Advocate
“I am deeply honoured to join UNICEF India as a Celebrity Advocate. Growing up playing cricket taught me that every dream begins with an opportunity. With hard work, determination and encouragement, that opportunity can turn into something extraordinary. Every child and young person deserves the chance to dream big and reach their full potential,” Mandhana said.
Cynthia McCaffrey, UNICEF India Representative, highlighted the significance of Mandhana’s appointment at a time when India is home to the world’s largest generation of children and young people. McCaffrey emphasised that investing in girls’ rights, leadership and well-being represents a strategic priority for national development. She outlined UNICEF India’s vision for partnering with Mandhana to expand opportunities for girls across the country.

“Smriti’s journey from an aspiring young athlete to a global cricket icon demonstrates to girls what is possible when talent meets opportunity. At a time when India is home to the world’s largest generation of children and young people, investing in girls’ rights, leadership and well-being is a nation’s smartest investment. We look forward to partnering with Smriti to help ensure every girl has the opportunity to learn, play, lead and fulfil her potential,” McCaffrey said.
The International Day of the Girl, observed on October 11 each year, focuses on recognising the rights, safety and potential of girls while drawing attention to the systemic challenges that limit their choices and opportunities. Mandhana’s appointment on this significant date underscores UNICEF India’s commitment to leveraging sports and celebrity influence to advance girls’ empowerment across the nation.
