Reports: Ajit Agarkar informs BCCI he is unwilling to continue as chief selector, board set to beign hunt for successor
SHARE

Ajit Agarkar‘s three-year run leading India’s senior men’s selection panel is effectively over, with the BCCI now set to begin identifying a replacement. The trigger was the board’s 95th Annual General Meeting, held on Friday, at which office-bearers were formally authorised to fill vacancies in line with recent convention.

The 95th AGM resolution gives the BCCI leadership the mandate to proceed with the appointment without convening another full general meeting, following the same approach the board has used in recent selection cycles.

Multiple member representatives who attended the AGM confirmed that, on the sidelines of the meeting, office-bearers told delegates the board would initiate the process to find Agarkar’s successor. A BCCI office-bearer, speaking to The Hindu on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Agarkar had formally communicated to the board just before the AGM that he did not wish to carry on in the role once his term expires on October 4.

What did BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia say after the AGM?

Despite the confirmation from the anonymous office-bearer, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia remained non-committal when speaking to reporters after the meeting. He indicated that no formal decision on any individual had been taken at the AGM itself and that the board retained time before Agarkar’s term formally closes.

“Today, there was no discussion on any individual. We still have 15 days to go. Fifteen days is a long time in the world of cricket. We have 15 days time, we will take a decision at an appropriate time. We will let you know about it,” Saikia said, as quoted by The Hindu.

Saikia’s remarks suggest the BCCI is keeping its public position open even as the informal search appears to have begun. The contrast between the office-bearer’s confirmation and Saikia’s measured public response reflects the board’s standard practice of managing such transitions away from the spotlight before making any formal announcement.

What happens next with the selection committee vacancy?

Agarkar’s term as the head of the senior men’s selection panel is set to formally conclude on October 4, giving the BCCI a defined window of roughly 15 days from the date of the AGM to complete the process. The board has not publicly named any candidates for the position, and no successor had been confirmed as of the day of the meeting.

The AGM’s authorisation means office-bearers can move ahead with shortlisting and appointing a new panel head at their discretion, without needing to call the full membership together again. The board has not disclosed the criteria or timeline it will use for the appointment beyond Saikia’s indication that a decision will be communicated in due course.

No verified information on potential candidates or the formal shortlisting process was available at the time of the AGM. The BCCI is expected to make a public announcement once a decision is reached within the October 4 deadline.
