Rangers & Motherwell have tickets cut for pyro use

Rangers and Motherwell fans will have their away allocations cut by 50 tickets for one match for repeated breaches of Scottish Professional Football League rules regarding pyrotechnics, with the threat of the penalty doubling.

Aberdeen and Hibernian have been served with suspended penalties.

All four Scottish Premiership clubs were deemed to have failed to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, that their supporters did not engage in “unacceptable conduct”.

The clubs were also found to have failed to identify and/or take proportionate disciplinary measures against the supporters responsible for the pyrotechnic displays.

Rangers and Motherwell had previously been issued with suspended punishments, which have now been triggered.

The sanctions apply to Rangers’ trip to face Hibs on 1 February and Motherwell going to Dundee on 4 February, and both clubs must pay the cost of the 50 missing tickets to the home clubs.

The governing body examined five recent top-flight games involving “large-scale, organised and illegal pyrotechnics displays” from travelling fans:

  • Motherwell v Hibernian – 25 Nov

  • Falkirk v Motherwell – 3 Dec

  • Dundee v Aberdeen – 6 Dec

  • Kilmarnock v Rangers – 6 Dec

  • Rangers v Motherwell – 27 Dec

The SPFL disciplinary proceedings found Motherwell supporters had activated “around 20 devices” in each display.

A child was injured as a result of the Rangers display at Rugby Park.

Hibs supporters “threw devices towards players and staff of the home club” at Fir Park.

The actions of some Aberdeen fans led to damage to the Dens Park pitch and caused a burn injury to a child and respiratory issues for another person.

“These incidents caused a health and safety risk to fellow supporters, players and those working at matches; as well as a significant inconvenience to thousands of supporters at the matches and fans watching these games at home,” the findings state.

The report adds that Rangers and Motherwell are now facing a suspended reduction of 100 tickets for a future away match in the event of a further breach.

Meanwhile, the 50-ticket penalty will apply to Hibs and Aberdeen in the same circumstances, with the terms of those conditions running to June 2026.

Rangers and Aberdeen have both released statements urging their followers to cease such behaviour.
