One of England’s most promising attacking talents, Raheem Sterling career has reached a stalemate. His brief and unexpected sojourn at Arsenal — which many fans of the club and commentators saw as, potentially, a last-chance resurrection in the Premier League — is now officially over. And with little impact, few minutes and no good tactical fit, the former Manchester City and Chelsea star exits the Emirates with more questions than answers.
Sterling arrived at Arsenal out of the blue last season, jumping on opportunity rather than a strategic long-term plan. Injury and patchy form had undermined his stock at Chelsea, and Arsenal, in the midst of a push for the title, saw in him a low-risk option to add some experience to their ranks. But things never really congealed.
Primarily used as an understudy to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, Sterling found it difficult to acclimatize to Mikel Arteta’s complex attacking set-up. His once lethal acceleration, and direct dribbling, felt a step out, while his decision making, often derided in his Chelsea days, remained muddled. In all competitions, he totaled just 11 appearances, starting only four times and scoring once — a far cry from the explosive winger who terrrorised Premier League defenses in his prime.

Arteta offered a public vote of confidence in Sterling’s attitude and professionalism, but behind the scenes it was evident that the system – and perhaps the pace of Arsenal’s evolution — had left Sterling behind. With no place in the future plans, both parties agreed to part ways at the end of the season.
So the question is simple now: What next for Raheem Sterling? He turns 29 this year and should be squarely in his prime, but his recent play is concerning. But for a player of his experience — nearly 300 Premier League appearances, a handful of titles, more than 80 England caps — there will be no shortage of suitors.
A foreign transfer is looking all the more certain. In Italy, AC Milan have shown early interest in the Sterling. So now the question is simple: What’s next for Raheem Sterling? A foreign transfer is looking all the more certain. In Italy, AC Milan are said to be expressing early interest, seeing Sterling as a potential fit in their 4-3-3 setup. Clubs in the Saudi Pro League are also hovering with lucrative offers, which given his recent direction of travel may provide too much of a temptation. Yet friends of the player insist Sterling is eager to continue performing at the very top level and to demonstrate his detractors were wrong.

A move to Liverpool, though romantic for some, seems improbable. Jurgen Klopp is thriving in a new era of wide forwards and Sterling remains the source of open wounds for sections of the Anfield faithful since his 2015 departure. A switch to a mid-table Premier League club such as West Ham or Aston Vila may be the platform for him to resurrect his career.
Raheem Sterling isn’t done — but he needs to change. The qualities that once made him, briefly, elite — blistering speed, sharp movement, directness — have, slightly, faded as he has grown older. If he wants to remain relevant at the top level, he needs to adjust his game. Players like Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry prolonged their careers by growing smarter, not exclusively swifter. Sterling must follow suit.
His career may need the shake-up a move abroad could deliver. A more technical league may suit him at the moment More easily but at the same time he can not play often and can not recover fitness. The talent hasn’t gone away — but the environment in which it thrives must be selected more judiciously going forward.
