Premier League: Struggling Eleven Wonders seek fresh start as Basake Holy Stars visit in second-round opener

Bottom-placed Eleven Wonders will be hoping for a fresh start when they host Basake Holy Stars FC at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Friday, January 9, 2026, as the Premier League kicks off its second round.

Eleven Wonders’ struggles show little sign of easing after suffering a narrow 3–2 defeat to defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars last weekend at the same venue. The result extended a worrying run of form that has seen the Premier League returnees lose five consecutive league matches, leaving them firmly rooted to the foot of the table with just six points from 17 games. They now sit a daunting 13 points adrift of safety, a margin that underlines the scale of the challenge ahead.

Defensive frailties have been at the heart of Eleven Wonders’ problems. They have conceded a league-high 28 goals while scoring just 12, and their home form offers little encouragement.

From nine league games at home, they have managed only four points (W1, D1, L7), scoring six and conceding 15. Friday’s fixture represents an opportunity to halt a three-game winless run on home soil as they chase only their second league victory of the season.

Basake Holy Stars FC travel to Accra looking to bounce back after a 2–0 defeat away to Dreams FC, a result that ended their impressive six-game unbeaten run (W4, D2) under head coach Johnson Smith. Despite that setback, they finished the first round outside the relegation zone and currently sit 14th with 20 points.

Holy Stars have found goals difficult to come by and have also struggled defensively, scoring 15 goals and conceding 20 in 17 matches. Their away form has been particularly concerning, with no wins from nine league games on the road this season (D3, L6). They have scored just three goals and conceded 15 away from home, a record they will be eager to improve as they seek a sixth win of the campaign.
