Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team after they lifted the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 title. Team India beat Sri Lanka Women by 72 runs in the final at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 13, 2026, securing their eighth Asia Cup crown.

India built the victory on a commanding batting display. Shafali Verma struck 68 off 39 balls, and Smriti Mandhana contributed 59 off 39 balls as India posted 183 for 5. Sri Lanka were then bowled out for 111, with left-arm spinner Shree Charani returning figures of 4 for 20 and Deepti Sharma claiming 3 wickets. The win also settled a score from the 2024 Asia Cup final, in which Sri Lanka had defeated India.

What did PM Modi say about India’s Asia Cup 2026 win?

Posting on X after Harmanpreet Kaur-led team’s commanding victory, Modi highlighted the team’s collective effort across the tournament and expressed pride in the achievement.

“A proud moment for Indian cricket! Congratulations to the Women’s team on winning the Asia Cup. Their confidence, consistency and remarkable spirit were on full display throughout the tournament. May this triumph inspire millions of youngsters across the country to play more and shine,” he wrote.

How significant is India’s eighth Asia Cup title?

India’s triumph in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 is their eighth title in the tournament’s history, reinforcing their standing as the dominant force in women’s cricket across Asia. The achievement carries added weight given that India had fallen to Sri Lanka in the 2024 Asia Cup final, making the 2026 victory a direct reversal of that result.

The final at Dubai International Cricket Stadium showcased a complete team effort. The Indian opening duo of Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana set the platform with the bat, while the bowling unit, led by Charani and Deepti, dismantled Sri Lanka’s chase to seal a 72-run win and claim the title in an emphatic fashion.
