Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer shed light on what has driven his team’s remarkable turnaround this season, as they clinched a top-two finish in IPL 2025. PBKS defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by seven wickets in Jaipur, with standout performances from Josh Inglis and youngster Priyansh Arya, who both struck fluent fifties to set up the chase before Iyer sealed the win. This marks the first time in 11 years that Punjab has secured a top-two spot, booking their place in Qualifier 1.

A major shift in fortunes has coincided with changes at the top — a new captain in Iyer and a fresh approach under a revamped team management. According to Iyer, the team’s consistency has come from different players stepping up at crucial moments, something he emphasized during the post-match presentation. He credited the side’s determined mindset and praised the support staff, particularly head coach Ricky Ponting, for creating a strong team environment.

“I truly believe everyone has risen to the occasion when needed. We’ve stuck to a mindset of pushing for a win regardless of the match situation. Full credit to the entire group and the management. Ricky has been incredible, and for me, it’s been about earning the trust of each player. That trust came through match wins, and it’s something we need to sustain. When things go wrong, it’s easy to point fingers, but we’ve stood by each other,” Iyer said in the post-match presentation.

Before the match, PBKS were second on the points table. Their win takes them to the top with 19 points, overtaking Gujarat Titans, who ended their campaign with 18 points and a Net Run Rate of +0.254. Mumbai Indians finished fourth with 16 points, while RCB, currently third with 17 points, still have one game left. The outcome of Tuesday’s fixture will determine who joins PBKS in Qualifier 1.
