Pakistan advanced to the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket semi-finals on September 28, 2026, after their first quarter-final against Hong Kong at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin was abandoned without a single delivery being sent down.

Persistent rain fell throughout the day in Nisshin, making conditions unplayable, and officials called off the fixture at the scheduled toss time. The tournament’s playing conditions for knockout matches specify that when a game cannot be completed, the team holding the higher position in the ICC T20I rankings at the time of the fixture advances automatically. Pakistan, ranked above Hong Kong, were confirmed as semi-finalists under that provision without any discretion available to the match officials once the abandonment was formalised.

Pakistan had entered the knockout stage as one of four seeded teams, the others being India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. All four sides received direct passage to the quarter-finals without competing in the preliminary rounds, a structural advantage that placed them on the favourable side of the draw from the outset.

How did Hong Kong qualify for the quarter-finals?

Hong Kong earned their place in the last eight through the preliminary stage, where they competed in a three-team Group B alongside Malaysia and Oman. They defeated Malaysia by eight wickets to open their campaign but then suffered a 41-run loss to Oman, which left them second in the group standings and secured their quarter-final berth.

The washout on September 28 denied Hong Kong a chance to test themselves against a seeded opponent on the biggest stage of the tournament. Pakistan had beaten Hong Kong in T20I cricket on both previous occasions the two sides met, at the 2022 Asia Cup and at the 2023 Asian Games, so the abandoned fixture also denied Hong Kong an opportunity to reverse that head-to-head record. Having navigated the group stage with a mixed campaign, Hong Kong’s exit without a ball bowled against Pakistan will be a source of considerable frustration for the associate nation.

Who will Pakistan face in the semi-finals?

Pakistan are scheduled to play their semi-final on October 1, 2026, against the winners of the fourth quarter-final between Bangladesh and Malaysia. That result will determine Pakistan’s opponent for the last-four stage, with Bangladesh entering that tie as fellow seeded contenders. Pakistan will now monitor the Bangladesh versus Malaysia quarter-final result before finalising their preparations for the October 1 semi-final at Korogi Sports Park.
