From the moment he went down in Monday night’s game against the Mariners, we unfortunately knew that Oswaldo Cabrera’s injury was pretty serious, and we now know just how serious. While attempting to score in the late innings on Monday, Cabrera suffered a fractured ankle, which the Yankees confirmed this afternoon.

While by no means an All-Star or anything, Cabrera has proven to be a solid contributor at the big-league level, capable of playing many different positions in the field.

In his place, the Yankees have added DJ LeMahieu to the 26-man roster. Reports were that the Yankees were planning on activating LeMahieu on Tuesday anyway, although Cabrera likely wouldn’t have been the player taken off the roster in his place. The devastating injury took any choice the Yankees had to make out of their hands, though, Pablo Reyes and Jorbit Vivas are both safe for now. LeMahieu has hit .444/.500/.593 in his handful of rehab games with Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. LeMahieu has been out all season, having suffered a calf strain very early into spring training. When healthy, he hasn’t been great at the MLB level in recent years, but hopefully he can keep it going from that fairly good rehab stint. He can simply slot in for Cabrera at third, or fill in at second as well with Jazz Chisholm Jr. out.
I think everyone here wishes nothing but the best for Cabrera in his recovery and, hopefully, eventual return from this injury.
